Dear Supporter,

A few years ago John Bolton proclaimed that "if [the UN Secretariat building] lost 10 stories, it wouldn't make a bit of difference." Yet President Bush has once again nominated John Bolton to be the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

John Bolton has regularly denigrated and undermined the work of the United Nations, and he has continued to do so in his temporary recess appointment. He was not the right man for the job when first nominated and he is not the right man for the job now.

That's why Council for a Livable World is joining the Open Society Institute's National Day of Action to Stop John Bolton on Wednesday, September 6. Mark this date on your calendar.

In anticipation of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee's vote on Bolton's nomination next Thursday, September 7, citizens from across the U.S. will contact their Senators to urge them to speak out and vote against Bolton's nomination. We want you to join them.

Since being named U.N. Ambassador by President Bush last year, Bolton has managed to alienate many of our closest allies with abrasive, uncompromising, "go-it-alone" actions.

At a time when the United States should be repairing its alliances and cooperating with other countries to solve the Middle East Crisis, the nuclear aspirations of Iran and North Korea and other challenges, Bolton has managed to antagonize even friendly countries and infuriate others.

Bolton has failed to achieve his stated top priorities of United Nations reform and an effective Human Rights Council. He has been unable to organize the world community to stop genocide in Darfur, to persuade Iran and North Korea to abandon nuclear weapons plans, or to refrain from provocative missile tests.

On September 6, we urge you to speak out in unison with thousands of other concerned citizens to oppose the re-nomination of John Bolton as U.N. Ambassador. We will send you information on how to contact your Senators next Wednesday.

Sincerely,

John Isaacs Guy Stevens
