Im sure this has happened to everyone at one time of their lives: YOure sitting at home wondering what to do in the middle of the night. WHy not go tagging you think. So you search around your hous but alas, there are no materials. Fear not however, because now i am here with this handy tutorial on how to make your own graffitti material out of common houshold items.

Okay, let us first see what any writing ustensil is made up of.

First: there is the ink. This is formed of a pigment and a solvent. These can be extremely simple or extremely complex and chemical rich. An easy house hold source for this are obviously pens, fromwhich you can extract your ink. however if you dont want to go around cutting up your fancy pens and sucking out the ink you can use shoe shine. Youll probably need to add some kind of solvent, like turpentine or white spirit so that it really sticks to your surface. Ive also heard of people using engine oil, but ive never tried it. All maner of dyes and paints can be mixed up to form a decent ink. Essenial things to make sure of is that it is slightly oily in consitensy, but not so thick that it doesent flow very readily. Play around with your proprtions until you have a perfect ink, that flows but doesent drip too much.

Second you need a container to keep your ink in. The most simple form of container ad nib arangment is a brush, with your ink inside the brush. AS a brush you can use a sponge. The advantage is you can the cut your sponge to suit your painting needs. For easy use you can fit your sponge onto a small bottle and tape it in firmly after having filled the bottle with ink. A more complicated pen can be made from a smalll longish plastic bottle and some cloth. FIrst you need to fill your bottle with ink or paint. The fold your cloth so its fairly thick and place it so it covers the mouth of the bottle and overlaps onto the sides. Then tape on the cloth firmly. When you tip the bottle the ink should soak into the cloth but not drip out. YOu may need to do a little experimenting here. If the ink dries on the cloth you have to replace it so try to calulate the amount of paint you put in the bottle to suit your needs.

IF your feeeling very adventurous, find yourself an OHP or some relaively thick paper. Next drawn or print on a stencil. Next realise you dont have any spray paint (optional). Find yourself a cleaning fluid bottle and fillit with paint. Now hold your stencil to a surface at arms length with and spray your paint onto the stencil. YOu can also use a sponge to spoge in the paint. Make sure your spong is not to soaked when you do though. When spraying it on, wait for each layer of paint to dray before spraying again to avoid dripping.

This next technique i propose only for those of you who dont mind wasting food or plants. FInd yourself some hard choclate. Hold it so that the wrapper or some sort of protection cover the point of contact between the choclat and your hand. Write. YOu can try this out with any other slightly chalky pigmented foods you might have . Also worth a try are plant leaves. Just get a bunch and get writting. Only try this on roughish walls though. Try using realitively greasy leaves for this too.

There now youre all ready.

Colour up your cities folks!

Nice! Also litre bottles of PVC (?) paint are pretty cheap. They're fairly thick though, so water them down a little. You could also but some PVC glue and crush up some watercolour paints into it.

You can make a paste using flour and water. Add some pigment like food colouring into this and you've got yourself ink.

Yes, edible ink. Add some sugar or salt and oil and youve got coloured gruel: enjoy.

Watercolours are expensive though, and you might not want to use them up.

If anyone has ever been to mexico they have some traditional chocolate thats very very dark. I hat all chocolate so i didnt really have a problem doing this. It sticks really well on most surfaces and is quite tiresome to remove. Perfect if your need to tag something quick.

A square of linoleum can make a great stencil, easy to roll up too.

i just use posterboard for my stencils. its light, but pretty durable too. and if you sue it alot the layers of paint add some extra strength. and its really easy to cut out.
