The 4th anniversary of the students uprising in Iran
The International League of Peoples Struggle (ILPS) extends its militant support to the widespread struggle of workers, students, teachers, women and other toiling masses of Iran. In particular we extend our heartfelt solidarity to the recent strikes of the workers and university students in Tehran and other cities and commemorate the fourth anniversary of the 9th July 1999 students uprising in which at least one student was killed and hundreds others were injured. During this heroic struggle of thousands of university students protesting against medieval policies of the Islamic regime, the students challenged the whole reactionary regime of Islamic republic. In the ensuing savage suppression of the students movement, Khatami (the president) and other liberals joining Khamenei and other hardliners and by calling the militant students, thugs exposed their true nature in the eyes of the world. The July 9 uprising of the students unmasked the real nature of the liberals within the regime and exposed the fact that there is no difference between Khatami, Khamenei and other leaders of the reactionary regime. The July 9 students uprising in which thousands of the oppressed masses had joined, also demonstrated that in oppressed societies no matter how severe the spread of suppression and the rule of terror and repression, the reactionary regime in power can not stop the
people from protesting and continuing their struggle, and can never hinder the revolutionary upsurge of the masses. The recent bloody events in Iran and the huge militant protest actions of the students in Tehran and other cities, show that the students inspired by the lessons of July 9, 1999 uprising have this time in a more determined and resolute way raised the
banner of the revolutionary struggle against the reactionary regime.
We resolutely support the just struggle of the workers, students, women, teachers, oppressed peoples and the toiling masses of Iran. We condemn the suppression of the recent students movement by the Islamic regime and demand the immediate freedom for all political prisoners including thousands
of students captured in the last few weeks. We strongly condemn the ominous plans of US and other imperialist powers that aim to maintain and extend the imperialist domination in Iran and have designs to lead astray the anti-reactionary and anti-imperialist struggle of the oppressed
people of Iran. The peoples of Iran by relying on their own resources and persisting in struggle, can crush the rule of reaction in Iran and defeat all plots and machinations of the imperialist powers and achieve their liberation.
The ILPS as an international democratic and anti-imperialist organisation, an alliance of over 230 mass organisations from 40 countries established in May 2001, is determined to render every support to the workers, students, women and other toiling masses of Iran in their just struggle against
the reactionary Islamic regime and against the imperialist domination in Iran.
Down with imperialism and all reactionaries!
