Hello, I'm looking for organizations that I can volunteer at to help out with any type of oppressive relief, or humanitarian relief.
I know of some like red cross and amnesty but i'm looking for ways and suggestions to help directly, as in not fundraising etc.
Thanks in advance if you know of any.

If your old enough the Peace Corps is always good, but your not allowed to be politcal and it literally takes away a whole 2 + years of your life.

Look in at the churches in your area (if u don't mind religion)
They usually have some type of relief or volunteer program that helps out the homeless or the poor
And they're more than willing to use volunteers
Local food banks or homeless shelters are always good
Or try the local library, they usually have announcements for volunteers interested in helping others
BTW: I admire your goodwill :)

I'm going for something more along the lines of the peace corps except I'm a canadian citizen, and have no U.S. citizenship as of now.

Since when do you need US citizenship to travel and work in the USA? :P

I remember something called "Food not Bombs" which is a worldwide organizing campaign to feed people - I guess you could look into that as well.

The League, along with the Free People's Movement and other groups, are organizing the International Committees of the Red Star. You might be interested in getting involved with that.

It probably shouldn't be that hard to find local stuff to help out with. Just look for flyers at leftist hangouts or the library, etc.
There are generally a lot of volunteering opportunities in one's local area and if there aren't, you could always organize your own.

The Peace Corps is fundamentally intertwined with politics. The whole point of the org. is to boost the US's image in the rest of the world. There are much better alternatives to the Peace Corps.

In Canada, you can volunteer at food banks, Native friendship Centres, AIDS or other resource centres (like Women's Centres/Shelters), homeless shelters, ect. Just think along those lines. Most of these organissations have branches in even smaller communities. Also, there is a major push to stop the shuffling of homeless people from city to city, so you could always become involved in this effort. If you live in the Victoria area, there is a supreme court case challenging the bylaw allowing police to make homeless people move from public areas. They need volunteers. If your old enough, you could become a big sister/brother, also, if that interests you at all.
