most of us know that Haiti is the poorest country in the world. and recently its goverment has been unstable. Can someone direct me to some facts? Im curious to know who is to blame or why is this island such a turnmoil. Where is the U.S. hand in all this?

what does the U.S. get out of Haiti? what could be their interest. I mean do they have much of natural resources?

Let's be honest. That's what imperialist expansion is all about. New markets and cheap labor.
Another side benefit is of course yet another strategic outpost in the Caribbean.

Haiti has, over the past few years, been a lesson to South America. Vote for Our Guy, or we'll turn you into *that*.
For now, the US knows Preval, while currently relatively popular and socialdemocratic, won't survive unless Haiti can extract itself from the depths of poverty - which means that he has to do what the US wants. I predict a slow recovery, hampered by an increasing dependance on the US. It might be the old 'we own you' debt trick, it might be something like electricity; we'll have to see.

celebrity recording artist Wycleff Jean enjoys a luxury life style here in the U.S. he is a sucessful producers and artist. He is Haitian and always says he loves Haiti and praises Haiti. He visits often and helps out his people. is that enough? what can people like him do to REALLY help his island nation?

Here is a small article that tells of the different paths Cuba and Haiti have taken since the Cuban revolution. Haiti has had all this 'aid' whilst Cuba has had nothing but grief from the imperialists but Cuba is vastly superior to Haiti. Haiti gives us an impression of where the US will take a subjugated, beaten Cuba.

Niether Cuba nor Haiti need necessarily offer any 'economic gain' to the US. As Chomsky puts it, like Vietnam any country that wishes to connduct its affairs outwith the US model of the world and runs the risk of setting a 'good example' to other rebels in other countries, will feel its wrath.

Fuck Wycleff Jean. He publicly supported the U.S. coup in Haiti, and his family was part of the U.S.-installed dictatorship that ran the country afterwards.
It's not All about That!: Wyclef Jean is fronting in Haiti (http://www.haitiaction.net/News/HIP/11_2_4.html)
ok so Jean-Bertrand-Aristide was the former president of Haiti right? he was thrown out of office by who? and why?

Its most likely because the leaders who run Haiti are very corrupt and exploit their people while they collect the profits.
Maybe Haiti should start participating in global trade and get rid of all its barriers to economic growth. It might not make its economy explode right away, but it will lead the small nation in the right dirrection.

Can you explain what would be much different on the island of Hispaniola if Haiti decided to introduce free market reforms?
