Does anyone know much about communes??

All I really know is that there are just a left based society where people can live freely without all of the opression and other problems caused by capitalism. I know they were pretty popular in the 60s and that lots of hippies lived in communes.

I would love to learn more about how communes work and how popular they are in modern times.

So far I believe there are still several around, such as Freetown in Denmark, but they are frequently harrassed for taxes and etc.

They were likely the most popular back in the 1800's, with the greatest examples being Owen's experiment and the Paris Commune of 1871.

The Paris Commune of 1871 is the basis for Marxist Socialism, which Marx said would be what Socialism would basically look like in its transition.

The Paris Commune of 1871 wasn't really a commune in the traditional sense. A commune in France is sorta like a munincipality in the USA.

Don't compare a town in insurrection/revolution to a lifestylist commune. They are fundementally different things.

I'm sure they're very nice for those who live in them, but they aren't any kind of solution or challenge to the power structure.

I dislike the title of this link, due to the fact that many of these communities didn't even follow a sort of political principle such as "anarchism" or "marxism". Some of these examples can widely be considered as "lifestylist", "marxist", or even "capitalist", but wikipedia has given them the name of "anarchist communities":

Past and Present "anarchist" communities (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Past_and_present_anarchist_communities)

These are some good examples of "communal" living.

Yeah they arent especially political.Living together with people, taking your food from nature..great!..In the 60's however women did most of the housework and many times they were used by men for their sexual pleasure. It can work however, and I'm freindly towords this idea.

Live in a Commune and help others (http://commongroundrelief.org/)

Founded by a former Black Panther, I strongly encourage anyone with the ability to volunteer, to do so.

Communes are good examples of what communism might be like on a small scale. The main ones that are around now are the kibbutuzes in Israel, but I think they're pretty religious.

The Kibbutuz can really no longer count as a good example of "communalism". They largely now rely on humanitarian and millitary aid from that of the Israeli state, and have left behind a sort of "socialist" ideology. They currently serve a important role in the "colonization" of the West Bank, as Israel has been installing small armored villages of "settlers", that would spread the promised land.

Everyone who replied really helped because I was pretty confussed and unsure about communes. The links were expecially helpful. Thanks everyone.
