Does anybody know what, if any, interests the US gov has in T&T? I figure, with all the oil being pumped there, they are not managing to keep their filthy hands away?
Any and all info is MOST welcome, I've searched and searched, but it's really hard to come by.
Thanks in advance :)

i think the grasp of american imperialism isnt too great in trinidad. it's a former british colony so england i'm sure has it covered. i dont think the oil that does come out of trinidad is anything to write home about.

The US is heavily invested in Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad and Tobago is also a major exporter of oil and natural gases to the US.

Ok, any more specific info? Like which (if any) specific companies have a heavy presence there, is t&t dependant on US support in any way for example?
What kind of government is there in T&T, by the way?

Trinidad and Tobago are especially valuable to the U.S. right now because of their strategic location in regards to Venezuela. Of course, there are oil interests too, as has been mentioned. Shell is the biggest corporation there as far as I'm aware. Shell is from the UK, but it makes its most money from the U.S.. Texaco (which is U.S. based) and Tesoro are big there and there's a big state owned oil company too. BP used to be big there, but I don't think they're there anymore.
A group of Islamacists took over the government (and held alot of people hostage) for a few days in 1990, but since since then it has been relatively stable. Crime is bad and get worse by the minute. This is a result of poverty and unemployment, just as it is everywhere else.
There are alot of workers' struggles in Trinidad. Alot of strikes in recent history.
They have a bourgeois democracy. The rightist PNM is the ruling party.
