Latin America has a serious problem

That problem is it's treatment of blacks. Now i recently read an article about how Latin America is quick to criticize the racism in the US despite the fact that most LAtin American countries don't treat the black citizens in their country fairly.

Brazil, Argentina, Peru, etc. (with teh exception of Cuba I think, not sure) don't represent their black citizens in their media, their black citizens are the poorest there, and their govts. are almost devoid of blacks.


Now unfortunately I can't find the article(still looking, if anyone has it could you please post it) but I was wondering what are your thoughts on this situation?

Yes, I've heard that there is racism towards blacks, and even against non-whites in general. Mulattos, natives, they all face it, just to different extremes. It must be worse for the african latinos if they aren't even represented in the media or government.

ahhh, i have living proof of his in my home. Its not anything extreme or important, but it is still racism. My grandmother who actually was born in a very poor place, and undoubtedly has some black ancestry, is some what racist towards them. She tries to hide it, but she always makes her comments, as if they were criminals and inferior, and always suspicious of them. I find it so absurd and hypocritical of her to act like that as if she wasn't partly black herself.
It damn right upsetting how poeple can be like this, and not just her, but whole governments ; pieces of shit that work for nothing...

Yes, there is a lot of racism in peru.. The black dont get jobs in banks, finer restaurants etc, if it isnt about becoming janitor or something. Blacks often are refused entry to nightclubs in the so called nicer areas too, and the blacks and indigenous people are the ones living in the poorer areas of towns and outside.. The few "whites" are the ones getting jobs, though now Peru has a cholo as a president, the first one really. Dont know if he is all good though. Seems like he isnt. But its true that the blacks are worst off,...

Of course blacks get the shrt end of the straw iin Latin America. This woud explain the massive racial/ethnic diffeences in those (generallywhite) who are marching against the attempts by Chavez to build a more egalitarian society and the crwods who support him

Well I just watched a news report and apparently this goes on in Cuba as well, also while black cubans only make up 6% of the population they are almost the majority of the ones in the jails and they are subject to unlawful arrests

yea this is a big problem, cause my mom and dad don't like black people that much. for example my mom and pop always telling me "no mas negros en la casa" it gets annoying to the point were i have to cuse em out so they can shut up. but the thing is that when i tell my mom that she always saying racist remarks she always denies it. its a shame. a damn shame. and i live in america, when i went to puerto rico my mom's side of the family was the same thing. and the same with my dad's side but not as bad but it was still there. somthing gots to be done about this because its pure disrespect and it gives the hispanic people a bad image.

I've never seen the problem with Puerto Ricans atleast not in America....

hugo, welcome to the board. There's no denying that the States are incredibly racist, but I don't think this is really an issue in which you can measure the most racist. Obviously some countries are better than others, but we just have to know the main culprits.

Lardlad, Inti, Juju and anyone else who might know, is this racism institutionalised, I mena moore than finding more blacks in jail? Can you give us more information?

Sadly, what you all say is very true. I have seen this too. As beautiful as my beloved Costa Rica is – there is this racism going on there too.

ALL of the people of Latin America need to Unite against the beast from the North – this is what I believe. I will work towards that end specifically, I promise you that.

I am moving to Costa Rica from Chicago – forever –- effective 31 de Julio – and this is my goal – to educate everyone I meet as to what the real deal is, no matter where they are originally from or what tey look like.

We need a United Front – and this infighting within the "oppressed" ranks will NOT do in my opinion. This specifically must stop.

By the way – I am by appearance a White Female – However I have Latin blood as I am ½ Sicilian-Italian and have very dark skinned relatives by that bloodline. My mother also looked very Eskimo, as she had a lot of Lapland Norwegian blood – but I came out looking very Scandinavian White – this is how the gene pool dealt me my genes – and so what.

We are ALL human – and I have also been fucked over by the system by virtue of being a single parent etc. It all sucks, no matter what - and also no matter what we all look like. This is a fact.

So those of you who might be getting down on White People in general may also be guilty of this same thing – as many people who are of White skin are also oppressed and shit on in many of the same ways as the people of color.

I repeat – we ALL need to stage a UNITED FRONT against the Capitalist-Imperialist aggressors who are fucking us over – NO MATTER what we personally look like. This is what I say – and this is what I will be saying to all I speak with both publicly and privately.

We MUST ALL work towards this same end - everywhere.

Educate the masses – knowledge is power, and I will stand on that fact until I die, or until they assassinate me for saying it out loud.

Hail the Communist Revolution – Let’s all Work towards that end - Long and LOUD!!!

Well the traditional "black countries" in latinamerica are Brazil,Cuba, dominincan republic. Haiti, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Colombia and a little bit in Ecuador and central american countries.

In the rest of latinamerican countries blacks get worst treatment like for example Chile or Ecuador they really don't like them.

They don't even call them citizens just the black in a real hurting manner.

I don't mean to judge these countreis or generalize I'm just talking about experience.

I have an important amount of african heritage almost half of me is african and I'm very proud of that.

It's weird but in such a multicultural country as Venezuela for decades the power was in the hands of europeans.

The mayority of Venezuelans are meztizos , mulatos or blacks only 20% are white and mostly direct decendants of europeans.

Even TV was racial the white actors were the sexy strong inteligent men and the dark skineed ones were the dumb asshole thugs.

This was so disgusting.

That's why an important part of our revolution is to give back the power to tha mayority that happens to NOT be white.

We are the mayority the way we are taking back power is by educatiion and combating ignorance mostly.

An important part of this is to activate the MORDAZA law that prevents any stereotypical shows are comments toward diferent ehthnic groups.

Since Chavez came to power the afro-venezuelan and other mayorities have gain respect politcal importance and responsibility.
