Having recently been a speaker at my class graduation, I would have stood up and shouted her down.

Or maybe just let it happen and ignored it, depending on my mood.

That's the thing though: the school can never really "enforce" its rules effectively. We as leftists can never allow instutitions to make rules to make things "fair". They can't be trusted to enforce them, and moreover, it's our responsibility to step up, not trust the State to act on our behalf.

i dont care either if she feels god and jesus helped her get good grades or whatever. but the part of her speech when she started saying something like "if we all let god into our hearts you can be like me" not really like that word for word. But you know what I mean. she started preeching people. I didnt come to church I came to a damn graduation. save it

She should have her diploma revoked for cheating if God really did give her assistance in her exams...so she can choose between not graduating and renouncing her claim :-p.

It is unconstitutional (in the US) to talk about religion in your graduation speech.

How is it unconstitutional to talk about your religion at your graduation speech if FREEDOM OF speech is constitutional? and furthermore, the constitution allows the freedom of religion.

Freedom of speech with regards to public school children is a somewhat complicated issue in the US. Because students are forced to attend classes (or graduation), they are also forced to hear whatever religous speech might be spoken.

In an effort to "seperate church and state", US courts have ruled that school functions must be entirely secular.

So Jesus is personally responsible for intervening on her behalf and ensuring that all the other children (many of whom are probably devout Christians) at that school didn't become valedictorians? What a pompous *****.

No, that's not what she means at all, she means that her goal was to be valedictorian, and she got it throught the help of God and Jesus, because they helped her with her struggles, not necessarily meaning with her study.

Correction, she thinks Jesus and god helped her become valedictorian.

She should technically be allowed to say it. However, one should have more tact and not do the whole god and Jesus thing if there are people who might be offended. Save it for the orange crate on the street corner. Although it will be hard to believe then.....

No, she shouldn't be. Since people of various religious beliefs are present at the graduation ceremony and are required to be there, she cannot talk about religion because it is public property.

Anyway, it is unnecessary and plain disrespectful to talk about religion in your valedictorian speech. I sure as well wouldn't go up to give a speech and say GOD DOESN'T EXIST, because it is unnecessary and it would just be rude. If I wanted to hear a bunch of bullshit about god, I'd go to church.

Keep religion out of the schools.

like I mentioned before. this was a news featured on that Pat Robertson show the 700 club or whatever. MY QUESTION IS THIS MR. ROBERTSON! since you are defending this girl's freedom of speech. WHAT IF A MUSLIM STUDENT did the same thing but instead he or she praised Allah? HUH?

would that be OK?

i think not. fuck a christian named pat roberson

What goddam freaks! People here at my school are almost encouraged to openly advocate Christianity. I have a teacher who has business cards from her church advocating Jesus and saying that he died on the cross and shit. But if I advocated communism, I'b probably get suspended. And I go to a public school too.

And no matter what this girl is, I hope she gets some good ass money suing the school!
