Whatever happened to the hippies? I mean the old communists that used to be around in the 60s and stuff. The true communists, who realized that communism only worked on a small basis. What happened to the hippies who went to live in thier communes and lived peacefully. Whatever happened to the old socialists too. The hippies were never serious communists, cos dropping out to live in little communes isn't really progressive cos you aren't changing anything-Marx talked about historical progress not just about living collectively. People who'd read Marx wouldn't have taken them seriously.

Aggressive socialists and commies have always been around btw, and peaceful socialists and commies are still around. I really don't think anything has changed and there actually aren't many here who claim reactionaries don't deserve rights, they just stand out more. I find it how funny that when a socialist actually knows anything about economics, he is accused of being "bourgois." Socialism, Marxism, and Communism, in terms of economics, are all unscientific. There is no scientific way to manipulate or control the economy. All there is, is deciding how to use resources. And in socialism, its based on who is in power and what they want. Now in most historical socialist systems, the leaders have been both corrupt, meaning they benefit themselves, and inefficienent, meaning they are unable to promote economic growth and thereby increasing the standard of living.

Any current econimical critique of socialism is devoid of any value; socialism is participatory economics, not bureacracy.

A lot of them hippies either died out or are still living in their good old commune-anarchies,

but they are frequently being attacked (Literally) by whoever's goverment's land they are on - a example is Free town in Denmark ( I believe), which is frequently raided by police operations and with up to hundreds kidnapped everytime, and blockades and all that stuff, thus ruining their commune

I'm somewhat of a hippy, and the Libertarian communists (hippys) were the only group of reds I have ever respected bar maybe the South African communist party.

As for the current crop - all but a handful are consumed with hatred and speak of death and suffering... Though I can venture most of them live nice happy middle class lives!!!

It's a matter of how much you have to lose for going along with the present economic system. People who don't have much to lose because the system doesn't offer them anything would actively rebel against it. Those who benefit the most from it will defend it. The members of the middle class that you speak about are mostly indifferent. No system ever becomes obsolete through the voluntary actions of the rulers even if the ruled over have absolutely nothing to gain from a system that no longer benefits them. Kings and royalty were forcibly stripped of their power. The present rulers will require the same for those who want to overthrow them. However, presently it is a time of class compromise. But for how long?

Alot of the old hippies and leftists just adopted it as an identity, not really having any goals for the idealogy but only for themselves.

They either got swept up in the moment of social upheavel and Jimmy Hendrix guitar rifts, were going through adolecene and rebelled against the society they lived in or (few) actually believed in the society they dreamed of where everything was free.

Partly due to the perception they were nothing but beatneck, dirty stoners, their buzz was ruined and the times changed.
So over the years they grew up, and molded into the bougiouse hores they fought and now are destroying the world they sought to protect.

But, let us though never forget that they changed the western world in some ways, and helped bring us out of the days of the Plastic Marylin Monroe, Archie 'Fine and Dandy' era that so strangled us and our idea's.

Communes you speak of? Well I happen to be an organizer of one. Sixteen of us, all ecology students, 8 vegans, 7 veggies, one meat eater (curse him).

Hippies still exist today, except we are a much rarer breed than our predecssor.

In the world of globalization it is hard, it truly is. The 'reductionist' lifestyle takes on a lot of critizism, but we know what we are doing is right for the earth, and the creatures of it.

Marx may not have encouraged leftist minded people to retreat into new world societies, but we are still influnecing society for the better and we are no longer torn apart by capitalism. For a lot of us had a hard time not being chronicaly depressed living in 'that' society. So living in communes allows us to live by our morales, and still be part of society, so we can change it for the better.
