Tribute to deceased ETA members Basque Police prevented from taking place
Thursday evening a tribute in the Basque city of Donostia-San Sebastian to
three members of the armed Basque group ETA killed 15 years ago in a
shoot-out with the Spanish police. The prevention of the tribute, which
had been called by the left-wing organisation defending the rights of ETA
prisoners Askatasuna, followed a High Court order.

About a hundred people carrying a banner reading Patxi, Iñaki eta Jokin,
gogoan. Omenaldirik onena, garaipena" (In memory of Patxi, Iñaki and
Jokin. The best tribute, victory) had met in the neighbourhood of Morlans
before the Basque Police got to the place.

Before the beginning of the tribute, the police told the spokesman for
Askatasuna the tribute was banned and warned he could be accused of
"Praising terrorism" if the tribute took place.

The attendees left the place after laying a flower offering on the
portraits of the deceased ETA members and singing the "Eusko Gudariak",
the anthem of the Basque army during the Spanish Civil War
