Jailed ETA terrorist remains on hunger strike
By: ThinkSpain
Former ETA terrorist, José Ignacio de Juana Chaos, has been on hunger
strike at Algeciras jail since the 7th August in protest at not having
been released yet after he was granted parole in August last year. A
source at the jail explained that while the prisoner is refusing food, he
is drinking water, and is reported to be in good health.
De Juana Chaos has now served 19 years of the maximum possible term of 30
years under the 1973 Penal Code after he was convicted to serve 3,000
years for his part in eleven terror attacks that cost the lives of 25
people.
His parole was cancelled by High Court judge, Santiago Pedraz, on the
grounds that two letters written by De Juana Chaos to the Gara Basque
daily newspaper in December 2004 constituted terror crimes.
The news was greeted with satisfaction at the time by the Victims of
Terror organisation that had been alarmed by the news of the prisoner's
possible early release.
