FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
18 August, 2006
Republicans and Republican Socialists unite to commemorate H Block Martyrs
Chicago 25th Anniversary Hunger Strike Commemoration Report
*******
The Ten Hunger Strikers were commemorated this past Saturday, August 12 by
a crowd of over fifty who joined the Chicago Hunger Strike Commemoration
Committee in a fundraising testimonial. The event was a great success in
raising funds for the dependents of Irish political prisoners and
certainly
raised the profile of anti-GFA republican politics in the USA.
The CHSCC is a joint effort by the Irish Freedom Committe, Irish
Republican Socialist Committees North America and Concerned Group for
Republican Prisoners. It's the first successful effort in North America of
its kind since the '81 hunger strikes. All of the money raised by the
committee’s activities are donated to the dependents of Irish republican
POWS.
Speaker George MacLaughlin moved those attended with his stories of the H
Block struggles and the comrades he saw die. George was an organiser of
the first H Block Committee outside of Ireland, and he travelled widely
promoting the prisoners' cause.
Three POW crafts were raffled, with great enthusiasm from the audience.
Excellent rebel ballads provided by singer Joe Monahan and a good time was
had by all while commemorating The Ten.
The Commemorative Journal was also a big success in raising funds and
awareness; in addition the CHSCC was pleased to print a solidarity
statement from Leonard Peltier.
The CHSCC hopes to follow up its fundraising with a punk rawk show this Fall.
IRSCNA would like to thank the Irish Freedom Committe, in particular the
Chicago Cumman, the Concerned Group for Republican Prisoners for their
fantastic efforts and dedication, Ray Collins, Derry IRSP, The Starry
Plough, James Connolly Society, Irish Political Status Coaliation,
everyone else who submitted ads to our journals as well as our comrades
John and Padraig in Ireland for their great help.
