I have heard the following things about the USSR (mostly from economics class). I shit you not.

1) Everybody was forced to wear the same shoe size.
2) Being ingenutive was illegal.
3) The USSR went to capitalism because they saw americans with blue jeans, which they didn't have.
4) Nobody starves in russia anymore because they are unable to eat. Russia is a magical happy funland with pink unicorns and everybody is free. (I exaggurated that last bit from what my teacher actually said...but the first sentence is more or less ad verbatim).

Has anybody else heard similar bullshit?

Or anything they have heard that could be remotely true that they want to discuss?

My question is, did the class seem to believe these 'facts'?

I have a great aunt who lives in the former soviet union and actually did live in the soviet union and I remember her telling me that they could get shoes for free but they were all the same size, they were not forced.

Some stupid remark by some bourgeois liberal i went in discussion with

- Russia is so poor nowadays becauseduring the soviet union under putin, people took no iniative to do anything. When russians find out that free market is nothing to be afraid of, all russian will prosper....

Another one

- There was absolutley no form of culture in the SU

Oh and my favorite

- Sex was prohibited

And this one is really sickening

- They left aids patients and homosexuals on an island and left them there to starve

- Nah, i didn't like they way hitler ruled, although i have respect for his ideas (reaction from an aquaintance when asked about his opinion on the SU)

But how do we know those jeans are blue? Maybe they are black or red. Pictures can be misleading.

Does this mean that if you wanted right sized shoes you had to buy them? I mean were these free shoes the only source of footwear in the Soviet Union, or could you obtain shoes from other sources? Also what size were these free shoes? Did they look like Vladislav senior's shoes?

4) Nobody starves in russia anymore because they are unable to eat.

Was this sentence substatiated by any evidence? I'd be interested to hear somone try to defend the position that people do not die of starvation in a country with the size and economy of Russia.

Yes, pictures may be misleading.I asked him and he said that they were dark blue jeans. You have only my word, but whatever.

Dude, come one, obviously there was a variety of shoes and shoe sizes. That's one of the funniest ones I've heard.

That and

Sex was prohibited

You could easily obtain shoes of any size for almost no cost but absolute free shoes were all the same. But that might just have been her area.

Well, yeah.

Everyone knows that the movement of history is directed by people desire to obtain a pair of Levi's. <_<

As it happens though, if you had pounds, dollars and so on, I'm pretty sure you could get Levi's anyway in the old Eastern bloc.

Yeah it was truth too.
The first american blue jeans was shown to the Soviet people in 1986 by Gorby, This is why the USSR failed - because of this blue jeans.

I see the " iron curtain" has influenced the west people to be in ignorance much more than the soviet people. Of course soviet people had less clothes, shoes, everyday things, audio-, video, etc. but the life was not so bad as you image. They had all things with time delay after West while awkward soviet economy had created new things (as a rule some low quality than in the West ). Though food was more high-quality than in capitalist countries because of State control. Education was on high level, medicine was given proper control and attention from the State (anyway there were no spurious medicine, now almost a half of medicine are spurious - it is terrible).
Culture was very good (books, music, theatres, sinema, etc) Not sex was prohibited in the USSR but pornography was illegal. So some pieces of west movies were cut off because of bed scenes.

There were also "ideological" cuts. Some time ago Russian television showed several movies with some scenes pointed out that were cut off during Soviet times. And I still don't understand why they were cut off. It was such a paranoia.

That movie is hilarious. I like the long line after toilet paper. :D
