Hey Melbourne kids. This arrived in my email today, and it sounds like a great idea, especially while the government is trying to fuck refugees over even more. Activist art/theatre, yay! :D
Thank you for expressing interest in being part of "Tampa: A Human
Installation," on Saturday, August 26.
We are excited to have Robin Laurie, director of many large scale public performance events, including Kan Yama Kan, as our artistic advisor for this event.
We assemble between 11:30 and 11:55 at the Flinders St end of the Sandridge Bridge (see attached map). At noon sharp, a colourful procession enacts a symbolic journey crossing the Yarra on the footbridge, led by drummers and dancers and bearing the Shadowlands banners. We will be very visible on the footbridge. The procession ends at the red steps on the Southbank end of the Sandridge Bridge (see attached map). These stairs, which form an outdoor auditorium, happen to look remarkably like the photos of the deck of the Tampa! There, our travellers will be welcomed instead of turned away, as we enact an alternative history of welcome instead of refusal and so envisage an alternative future for our immigration policy. The welcome and celebration will include an indigenous welcome, a speech from Julian Burnside QC, a performance by writer Arnold Zable and Kavisha Mazzella and more music, dance and song.
The statues on the Sandridge Bridge will be a backdrop for our procession.
I'll send out more information as it comes to hand.
What you can do now:
1. Recruit your friends! Remember our minimum target is 433.
2. Tell us how many people you will bring to the bridge, if you haven't
done so already.
3. Help distribute the attached flyer explaining the current political context for
this fifth anniversary of the shameful birth of the "Pacific Solution" and
asking for people to express interest in being part of it. Everyone is
welcome!
4. Let us know if you would like to be part of a working bee to make props
for this event. To sign up email: [email protected]; or reply to [email protected]
5. Help us raise money to cover production costs. Send a cheque to:
Refugee Action Collective (Vic),
PO Box 578, Carlton South 3053.
Or DEPOSIT money directly into the RAC account, Commonwealth Bank
