I recently read an article in issue 358 of 'New Internationalist' (a magazine for 'global justice') written by George Monbiot who is also appearing at the marxism 2003 meeting.
Basically what he was saying in the article is that a world parliament should be set up to run things.
He also highlighted four main issues:
The first being as i previously mentioned a world parliment with two chambers - Where the first is directly elected by the world's people and the second consists of a democratized United Nations General Assembly whose members' votes are weighted according to the size of their populations and their position on a global democracy index.
The second major point is the scrapping of the UN security concli.
The third the closure of the IMF and the World Bank and replacing them with an International Clearing Union.
And finally a global trade regime which permits poor nations but not rich ones to protect their infant industries.
I've always been sceptical of world parliament in todays society as i can some idiot like Dubya getting power and f**king the whole world up.
What do you guys think of a world parliament in todays society with the reforms mentioned in the article being implemented?
apathy maybe

I compleatly agree with the need for a World Government, but with this present system of international terrorism from the capitalist countries it should not be implemented as power will "legitimitly" be in the power of the rich as it is in the USA today. We need a global revolution first. Or else just a compleate restructer of commerce and trade.
The first step in global tyranny, how long do you think it would take for it to be effectively bought?
What exactly would be the powers of this assembly? would it just be a reorganizing of the current UN, or would it be a genuine parliament?
the first doesn't sound so bad, the second is just outright terrifying.

Well it sounds good... atleast on paper. But at some point in every government, someone gets corrupt, and on such a large scale as the entire world, that would be devastating.

In the current circumstances it qwould be either impossible or disastrous, I know the UN is pretty much ineffectual, but any new World Parliament would probably end up being run by the States and nothing would get done because there would be constant disagreements between Europe and the States, at least that's what I would expect, I may be wrong. This sounds like a good thread for IHP.
from the InterAction's 19th Communiqué:
18. * The problems of today’s world call for better mechanisms and institutions for global governance. Such governance should be understood broadly, to include not only formal international organizations such as the United Nations, the IMF, the WTO, and the World Bank, but also regional associations and appropriate participation by civil society. Governments should seek to maximize consultation and cooperation amongst themselves, not only through formal institutions. *
19. * The Council notes that specialized governance structures, including regional forums and topic-specific institutions, have proven themselves effective in dealing with many issues. Regional organizations, in particular, can help provide invaluable information to international forums in time of crisis. *It is important that the rules and operations of such organizations are compatible with those of the broader international community

I'm very skeptical of a global government. I'm skeptical of government in general. I do not believe the expansion of a government in international terms is a solution to the problems of under developed nations. I am also skeptical of how this international government will solve the problems of two nations that are at each other's throats. Because let's face it... their are no rules in war and love.
I soppose the international community would have to carefully go over such a proposed plan to really weigh out the positives and negatives.

as of right now, its way to immense and gigantic to even think about
trying to establish a world government would most likely throw the whole world into chaos
during the 70s and 80s, the US, British, and other world power governments planned this, but it never got off the ground
it was called the Omega Project and it was to be headed by a board of people called Majestic 12
didnt even get off the ground
but a world government as of now is basically out of the question
it would be nice, but its not going to happen

Creating an interational government would be the first step toward making a capitalist super-state.
World government must not happen.
