I would like to start learning "Chinese".
And I have heard it is easier to learn Mandarin after learning Cantonese. Do you believe this is correct?
I was wondering if there is a site where one can learn some basic Cantonese or Mandarin?
Is there any site where one can learn simplified/traditional Chinese?

Do you have limewire? If you search "pimsleur" in Limewire you will find some Japanese language lessons. If there is a site on the net where one can host (is that the right word) audio files, I can give 'em to you.

No, Cantonese is more difficult than Mandarin because it has 7 word tenses in contrast with Mandarin's 4.

Mandarin is quite a difficult language. There are sites that give a basic intro
http://zhongwen.com/

But I would really suggest a tutor or class.

It should be Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó. It means the People's Republic of China.
Pinyin is more or less a new invention to help with the learning of the complex Chinese characters.
In China you would see the above phrase written as 中华人民共和国.
Remember, I'm always here if you need any additional help with simplified Chinese and Mandarin. :)

They have Pimsleur on Shareza and BitTorrent .. it's a good thing to download.. just recordings where you hear phrases then repeat.. but they're quality, and they easy to learn from.
I downloaded some on Shareza in dozens of languages.
Of course, like with any language, that will just give you the basics.. you'll need to immerse yourself in the language to get a real grip on it.

Hello, just wondering if there is somwhere in the web, or some program which i can type in chinese characters and it gives me the translation in english?
I know dictionary.com, in the translator section, you can type in english and it gives you Chinese character translation, but not vice versa.
I have been to China before, and Mandarin is much much easier guys.

The Teach Yourself series is pretty good from what I've seen. It's how I learned calculus.

No, Cantonese is very different from Mandarin. Cantonese preserves much vocabulary and grammar of ancient Chinese. And the pronunciations of majority word in Cantonese are almost different form Mandarin, and there are many vocabulary came from English, such as 'store' in Enlish and 'si duo(士多)' in Cantonese(similar pronunciation with English), but 'shang dian(商店)' in Mandarin. So, if you learn Cantonese first. Maybe you cannot communicate with majority Chinese.

Calculus is a type of mathematics that deals with curves, limits, changes and so on. For example the rate of change of velocity over time is called acceleration. Calculus would deal with acceleration.

www.crienglish.com has a decent section. I sometimes study there. Really the best way is to find someone who speaks chinese and ask them to tutor you. That shouldn't be too hard, and probably pretty cheap. Besides Chinese people I know get really hyped that someone wants to learn their language. Learn Mandarin though, and make sure its from a Mainlander not someone from Taiwan. This will definately be better than books and tapes.
