Anyone have any good suggestions for books about the Spanish Civil War? I would like to know more about the role of the anarchists, but also a good overall picture of the events. How the CNT and the working class reacted to the events as they unfolded would be very interesting as well. I've read Anarchism by Guerin and Anarcho-Syndicalism by Rocker so I have some background on the subject, but it seems like an incredibly fascinating time in history and I'd love to learn more.

Well Orwels "homage to Catalonia" is supposed to be good. Its his first hand account of his experiences in spain and covers the anarchist controlled areas a bit (ive been told).
Right now Im reading "we the anarchists" a history of the FAI, its pretty good.
I also heard "the spanish Anarchists: the heroic years" by murray Bookchin is very good. He just died last week so it might be a good homage to read it. I plan on it soon.
Check AK press, Im sure they have lots of stuff.

Okay, maybe I'll check those out. I knew they existed, but wanted to get recommendations. I didn't want to read a book on the revolution from a bourgeouis perspective

This book by Felix Morrow is always worth a read Revolution And Counter Revolution in Spain (http://www.marxists.org/archive/morrow-felix/1938/revolution-spain/)

Homage to Catalonia is indeed quite good. Although it is written in far more a narrative fashion than a historical text.

Not a book, but a great text. There are several chapters on the Spanish revolution and the civil war.

The Spanish Civil War by Beevor is a good overview of the conflict.

For an overtly Stalinist take on the Civil War (let's understand everyone's perspective), Dolores Ibarruri's They Shall Not Pass: the Autobiography of La Pasionaria is good. She was an organizer with the Communist Party of Spain.
Martha Ackelsberg's Free Women of Spain: Anarchism and the Struggle for the Emancipation of Women is also good. It goes into detail on the transformation (or not) of everyday life during the revolution, and that was, after all, supposed to be the whole point of the revolution in the first place, at least from an anarchist perspective.
