I'm curious about how traditional socialists feel about permaculture and sustainable economics, which, in my world, has completely replace Marxism as the favored political ideology.

Also, how do y'all rate J. Diamond (Gun, etc and Collapse) as a historian/political philosopher?

I happen to be a huge fan of permaculture, being an ecologist and all.

I think permaculture will be the farming of the future. No longer will we produce our food with disesal pesticides or fertilizer.

Also, being vegan, if the entirity of the farming industry was to be in a setting such as permaculture (having lived on such a farm for a summer) I would not regret or feel sorry for the consumption of animals and animal products. A life of a permaculture duck is a mighty finer life than an industrail duck.

Communism and permaculture will go hand and hand one day. I assure you of that. Any society that is going to thrive in the future is going to need to be eco-based.

I am a student-ecologist also, though i study disease ecology.

How about sustainable economics? This is radically different from standard communism. Is social justice a prerequisite for a sustainable society? Can it be done democratically? To me, this *replaces* communism, giving a new alternative to capitalism, and freeing the left from the history of failure that comes as baggage when you talk about communism.

Sorry for the delay, but I lack internet access.

I do not believe social justice is a prequisite for a sustainable society. Do I think our society should be have social justice? Of fucking course.

I believ permaculture is a great thing, and if we could base our economy on a similar structure we would have a sustainable economy and if you choose to believe that democracy is the answer. Than yes, it is your alternative to communism. However I dont believe democracy is the solution, more consensus is needed.

Where do you attend school? Few ecology based schools talk about permaculture and the ones that do even fewer accuratly touch upon it.

Sorry for the sparatic-ness, just got inside from a hot walk.
