What is the montevideo convention?

I was having a debate with a Uni student who take international law and says Kurdistan can't become a legal-state until it meet the principles in the montevideo convention.

So what is it? And is she right or wrong? I can't really argue with her as she is so much more knowledgeable and has like 10 years more experience in law than me and she's a bit of a righty.

These principles are generally used to allow "states" to qualify for statehood but certain nations have been recognized which leads people to question whether the guidelines are sufficient or not.
