Dude im pretty sure he doesnt want to fuck his sister in the book, after all he freaks out when he thinks his teacher feels him up, so yknow hes not into the whole fiddling thing.
The books about him breaking down because he doesn't fit anywhere and is plagued by violent misanthropy. Innocence and virginity are issues in the book because he holds onto them and associates himself with the world of children as opposed to losing them and growing up. Like he refuses to sleep with the prostitute and instead wants to talk to her, he always talks about sex in a naive and childish way and he only really thinks of one girl in a sexual way, I dont remember her name, he goes ice skating with her.
Theres a whole load of shit you could interpret from the book, mainly because after its banning when it was published and its strange almost biblical status among many wackos people have come to think it to mean alot of things. I very much doubt Salinger meant half of these things, like when we studied the book in school, they went so far as to try to teach us the symbol of circles in the book, circles have fuck all to do with the story.

The book was quite boring and mostly a rant against life but it did contain some themes that are very pertinent in today's world.

Better get used to it, that's the theme for the rest of the book. :P

the whole fact that the book is called Catcher in the Rye is that he wants to be the holder of innocence.
In the book when holden caulfied (main character) is talking to his sister about the song it goes something like
a body needs a body
in the rye
so his place in the book is to be the body needed to catch the body in the rye
and as for his sister, he finds her attractive but doesn't want to fuck her
in reality he wants to be the holder of her innoscene. The only reason he finds her attractive or worth saving is beacuse she is a virgin
all the other peope in the book he hates beacuse they are phonies hints the fact the are not virgins.
Holden wants to be the catcher. the beholder of all childeren beacuse he himself is a phony.

That's an interesting interpritation. I thought the main theme was the idealisation of childhood and his inability to conform to and engage with adulthood. So he idealised phoebe but didn’t want to sleep with her, he wanted her innocence. But with all that pervert stuff I thought he had been abused or something rather then projecting his desire on others.
anyways nothing much happends but i love the book anyways.

I think that Catcher in the Rye gets a bad rap for being "too angsty" or "whiny" or whatever, but ask yourself this: What teen isn't angsty or whiny at some point in their teenage life? It's just part of growing up, which is exactly what Holden goes through. As a teen myself, even I could relate a little. I notice the book is quite popular among teens, perhaps it's just because they can relate to it.

It is my favourite fiction, period. A wonderful book, wonderful.
By the way though, has anyone noticed that there are famous murderers who always have this book? The ones that spring to mind are Oswald and the guy who shot John Lennon, but me and my friend discussed it the other day, there are at least 6/7.

Yeah, but he's angsty, whiny and rich.
Personally, I hated the mardy little bleeder and I hate the book which is so overated and has dated very badly.

To enjoy any book you should probably learn about grammar and punctuation first.

 I get the feeling you may have a point here...
The reason why the book is so loved is because it so vividly captures the frustrations of adolescence - the alienation of meeting society and the loss of childhood. That's why almost every teenager (well, almost every teenager who can read, anyway) that comes across it becomes so enamoured with it - they empathise so closely with the protagonist.

Well just because someone does not like something you assume, more of pass off, their arguments as lack of understanding saying "oh you'll understand and appreciate it when your older"
I do understand. He's afraid to grow up, he refuses too. It can be a scary thing growing up. That is why he doe's bad in school, in the hopes that it will keep him in a world full of children. He is not going anywhere, stuck between child hood and adulthood and the pressures of pushing and pulling drive him to a mental break down. I was in a situation much like that when i started to have to grow up at 14, and I will probaly experience it again at 18. I do understand I just dislike how the book is written and find it over rated.
I beleive someone said the book is very "dated" which is another factor in me disliking it. Not to say i don't enjoy old books, just saying a book written in 1951 doe's not speak to me as much as it's suppost to this being 2006.
You're being much like the "phonies" Holden constantly grippes about in the book. They always say to Holden he does'nt understand.
However, in your defense arguments like:
I HATE THIS BOOK IT WAS BORING
Show no evidence of the person understanding and having reasonable argument against the book. But this person may have good reasons, just as you probably have good reasons for liking the book so much. Reading is a subjective exprience.

I agree that maybe not all people agree with me, but all the arguments against it, were like what you quoted above, usually with wrong spelling, and nothing to back it up, as in, why was it boring, why didnt you like it etc...

Lord Of The Rings was written before Catcher In The Rye, was it not? Nobody accuses that of being dated. Dickens, Jane Austen, Shakespeare, H.G. Wells, E.M Forster... Dated, all. :)

Great book. I like most books that go into the psyche of the person, and in particular one that's written as well as this. Can't understand why people didn't like it! So he whined a bit, why would that annoy you? Everyone whines!
