Media keeps claiming that this is the first time Fidel is abolishing his powers.

But wasn't it a time soon after the 26th of July movement won and the govt was set up, that Fidel resigned for some time because of a dispute with some of the more reformist liberals?

He didn't 'abolish' his powers...he 'transferred' them temporarily to Raul, while he gets better.

It's not a life-ending threat - it's just internal bleeding. Of course our media is making it seem that his head had been detached from his body...

Yea a lot of media people are saying he's dead already but that is based off nothing - he even said he was doing well in surgery.

Well, In america you have to take all news reports with a few handfuls of salt; they tend to be biased (depending on the source). I do believe that he isn't doing so hot, but he'll be back in action sometime soon.

Bleeding in the digestive system for an 80 year old is serious and a major life-ending threat.

And Fidels health is serious to the life of the cuban government as well. As long as Fidel has been the leader every attempt from the US the support a coup or divide the regime has failed. I didn't realise until recently, but Fidel is important for the unity of the government.

As to the question: I don't think Fidel ever has transferred all his power. However, after the victory over the us-controlled Batista-regime he didn't become president right away, but served about 6 months as a prime minister. And as you guess I think this was because of a power struggle. If I remember it right the movement who ousted Batista was a broad alliance of political parties, united by the desire to oust the corrupt puppet-regime of Batista, but not united in what to do afterwards.

Fidel didn't become president of Cuba until 1976.

Early on though, he threatened to resign his post and the Cuban people came out to make sure he didn't..
