I've been reading a lot of articles about Fidel Castro because of his current situation - I'm beginning to find the man fastinating and am really interested in learning more about him. Any suggestions on what to read?

Thanks.

Fidel Castro: A Biography by Volker Skierka...stay away from anything by Humberto Fontova....biased, opinion-based, lie-filled, fact-denying, book(the Fontova one)..the one by Skierka is good..

For his ideas - anything by Fidel is usually well worth reading - and I always recommend reading revolutionaries directly over letting some non-revolutionary interpret them for you.

If you have trouble finding them elsewhere, you can probably search amazon or whatever for author: Fidel Castro. Also, Pathfinder Press, and Pathfinder Bookstores if there's one near you, have plenty.

I can think of some good history about the Cuban Revolution - "Cuba for Beginners" to start simple - "Conflicting Missions" on Cuban foreign policy, "Aldabonazo", "Fidel Castro's Revolutionary Strategy: From Moncada to Victory", Che's "Episodes of the Cuban Revolutionary War". All of which is pretty closely connected to Fidel personally of course.

I think I've ever read a biography of Fidel, though. So I can't really recommend one, or comment on Solitary Mind's recommendation.

I recently brought home Fidel Castro: A Critical Portrait by Tad Szulc from my dad's house after visiting him. Can anyone tell me how good that one is?

Thank you so much for the suggestions... I'm so excited!

Also very helpful.... The topic of Cuba has been going around my office like crazy (little work gets done in that place) - it's made me so excited about learning more so I really appreciate the suggestions.

Wait, I did read that one, and fairly recently.

It's not bad - I don't think Szulc actually lies about anything. Has some useful info - I don't remember for sure if I noticed any factual mistakes.

I did notice he completely misunderstands - not just disagrees with - some major political issues. So if you're going to read it, read it for concrete facts.
