it seems that fidel castro is on his last legs many terrorists in miami have been celebrating, but is it all bad? could the death of fidel lead to a shake up in cuban politics which could benifit the people while still preseving the revolution?

Well he and his government have had a long time to plan for it, there's no way Castro would allow a situation to occur where he dies and the Americans create a puppet state, he will have been doing everything within his power to ensure this doesn't happen.

I think putting his brother in charge whilst he recovers from surgery is not that big a deal, the real test will come when he finally dies. I still believe (and hope) the party will keep control and rally the people against American imperialist goals, yet I hope there is some change in Cuban politics where the people have more.

A part of me does wonder whether he will ever retake power.
Quietly giving power to Raul Castro whilst still alive would give time for Raul to take control and so on, without the threat of the CIA and American imperialist plans coming into action. It will sort of 'play down' Fidel's death if Raul had already been in power for some months/years and thus make it harder for the Americans to act out any plan, especially if Raul implements some favourable policies, gaining support from the people.

I recently returned from an en mass trip from Cuba. About 20 of us communist here in Southern Ontario pitched money together so we all could go. Needless to say twas awesome.

I was remarkable impressed with the respect and love they have for Fidel, who has garnered this love and respect not via cult personality.

If Fidel dies - may the gods forbid such a action - I believe the Cuba people will retain Cuban socialism.

Now, is this good or bad? Well change is inevitable, sooner or later Fidel will die. Sooner or later, he will no longer be the figure head he now is - which is basicly all the power he currently holds, not to be said with disrespect, just truth.

The current path of Cuban politics is socialization, where anywhere else in the world that is considered a good thing, however here this is a regressive thought. I believe with the death of Fidel the path to socialization will increase, however I doubt to the fullest extent Cuba will ever become like Mexico is to the USofA.

On a side note, I heard on of the most remarkable things when I was done there. I asked a Cuban man to take me to the country side (being an ecologist, this is what interests me the most) to see the beauty and the living standards of average Cubans. I gained much respect for this man named Halrodo. He and I were talking about the war on Iraq. After I told him the price per day for the war in Iraq, the very first thing he did was tilt is head in a thinking style, and said "20 children in the world die every minute of every hour, of everyday. And they spend that much on a war?"

That one incident is what inspires me to believe Cuban Socialism will forever exist.

I'm looking forward to positive change if the Cuban bureaucracy crashes though that doesn't seem likely.

If this power exchange is permanent, I think this will be a very good step against those who consider him a dictator though I don't really see much difference between Fidel and Raul ruling.

He just had routine surgery and is feeling fine, resting with no danger to his life or capacity to function as president, it is no big deal and no one in Cuba is truely worried, it is simply 'optimism' on the part of the gusanos.

probably, but only if we end the embargo so they can be economically liberalized.
