I'm doing a project on War & Free Speech and was just wondering if you knew of any good websites to look at, pictures, thoughts, comments, videos...etc.?

Basically, the concept is, war helps the gov't take away free speech rights. ;)

Off hand, I can't think of any sites, but I can give you a few examples....and the best thing to do then, is to go and wikipedia and follow the external links. Or, you can do a Google search.

The first example I can think of, comes from WWI. The American Government imprisoned many radicals including, unless I'm mistaken, Debs and Goldman. This, of course, was done under the name of "National Security"; quite how America was under threat remains a mystery. <_<

I don't know of any examples in Britain from this time, but I'm pretty sure that Luxemburg was imprisoned in Germany during the War. And I'm sure with a bit of digging you could find many more examples.

During WWII, Nazi supporters were, of course, imprioned....the Mosley's of this World and so on. But, really, that's not something to ponder on. Other than that, you may want to talk about the internment of Japanese citizens and, if I recall correctly, the Socialist Party of Great Britain suffered harassment for not supporting the State. Though I may have the Parties name wrong.

Is this the kind of stuff you're going to be writing about?

Lest we forget the "Zoot Suiters" who got batted around by the cops for wearing what would now be considered "peakocking clothes"... highly "unpatriotic" in a time of war.

STI, my impression was that there was a large racial element to that riot though, true?

Yeah, there was. It was caused by anger towards the Hispanic population there.

Anyways, this topic is better suited for Resources and Online Classes.

Take the present US adminastration as an example. With their war on terror, it seems likely that free speech will be curbed if it has not already been....

Eugene V. Debs was imprisoned under the Espionage Act of 1917 after making his famous anti-war speech in Canton, Ohio.

Emma Goldman was imprisoned then deported to the Soviet Union, for setting up No Conscription Leagues and participating in rallies against WWI.

look up "espionage and sedition" act, patriot act, mccarthyism, state - sponsered union busting, limits on advertising, harassment laws, etc.

What about COINTELPRO, the Black Panthers, etc? Wasn't that in correlation with the Vietnam war?

The riot was in response to several things, most importantly the inferior treatment of Chicanos by both the police, the factory owners, and most importantly the brutal attacks on Zoot Suiters and other Chicano men at random by navy men off the naval base, they were leaving the docked ships, often white men from the American South with strong racial bias and trying to "put the local Latinos in their place" by going "hunting" for Latino men at night in Zoot Suits and then accosting them and beating them half to death, after the attack on several young men and the lack of response by the police in a particular incident the "Zoot Suiters" fought back. But in actuality they were met by many young naval men and police so it was more of a gang fight.

Also at issue was the poor treatment of the parents of the "Zoot Suiters" resulting in the lack of parental care at home. This lack of care resulted in some of the original Latino gangs, because young people were forced to care for themselves and their siblings while their parents worked long factory shifts.
