REPUBLICAN POWS ON PUNISHMENT BLOCKS THREE WEEKS
Three Irish Republican POWs have been in solitary punishment cells at Maghaberry Prison for three weeks for resisting a criminal being placed on their landing at Roe House.
Against the wishes of the Republican POWs, a criminal prisoner was repeatedly put onto a Republican landing at Roe House. Prisoners’ spokesman Terry McCafferty requested a visit with the S.O. in charge of the prison, to ask that the criminal element be removed from their landing in line with the Steele Report recommendations for the separation of Republican prisoners. Terry was subsequently charged with “threatening” the prison officer for his request and was put in a punishment cell.
“SEPARATION” A JOKE
Terry went to visit the S.O. in a civil manner as a spokesperson for the Republican POWs to amend the hostile situation on the landing. For his request he was placed in isolation for several days with only a bare mattress in a windowless cell. This treatment by the prison shows that recent claims made to the Irish Freedom Committee by Maghaberry Prison, that Steele Report recommendations have been implemented, are a JOKE.
After Terry’s release from the boards the criminal prisoner again confronted the Republican prisoners on their landing at Roe house. An altercation between the criminal and the Republican prisoners resulted in Terry and two other Republican prisoners being placed back on the boards for 28 days.
Republican prisoners TERRY MCCAFFERTY, NOEL ABERNETHY and PATRICK O’MAHONEY are being excessively punished for requesting that Steele recommendations be implemented, and for resisting a criminal and disruptive element from being repeatedly introduced into their housing. It is now three weeks and these men are still in solitary confinement in dangerous and unmonitored cells.
THREE POWS ON THREE-WEEK TOTAL LOCKDOWN
These men are on lockdown twenty four/ seven. They are denied all access to fresh air. They are permitted to shower only once every two days, surrounded by five screws. They have no clean clothes. They must order their food one week in advance and have to beg for everything.
They are allowed only one visit per week, and one phone call per day. To take a phone call they must be led to a locked phone booth by five screws, searched thoroughly going in AND going out, even though their only contact with the outside was through the phone.
CERTAIN PRISONERS SELECTIVELY TARGETTED
It is clear that the prison is selectively targeting certain prisoners for punishment and harassment. Terry McCafferty has been a thorn in the prison’s side since he and another POW refused to remove their Easter lilies last April. However we can report that the men’s’ morale is high, their spirits are up and they are standing strong.
