View Full Version : Living For Free In London.

Hi all.
Me and two other guys from RL (Noxion and Farleft) have got together and taken an empty pub in London and have now moved in.
We are spending this weekend clearing out the place, cleaning up all the crap that was there. It's a huge building with many rooms upstairs and ground floor, adjacent building (garage and pub garden) in it so it has the potential to expand into a great community of fellow squatters, revolutionaries and radicals. ;)
We are looking for fellow anti-capitalists (don't care if your a Marxist-Leninist, Anarcho-Communist, Autonomist Marxist, just as long as your not a reformist :P ).
We did not have to break into the place when we took it, the gate on the fence outside has this huge gap which you can crawl under and the main front window is wide open, no glass or board on it. It is in a safe condition and the pub has been closed and out of business for about 15 months now.
This is a key issue, for if you find a way in, and not break in, your case with the fucking law is that much stronger. :D

Hey,
yeah thats right, it's a huge place, loads of room for more comrades to join us, we know that rent is so expensive so this little community of revolutionaries that we are setting up will really help everyone out alot.
So if you're interested in joining us get in contact with either Anarchism now, noxion or myself.

whats the deal with your rights? can the council just come and ask you to leave at any monet and you have to go?

Global Justice:
I don't have much time now, but I'll PM you tomorrow or make another post on the rights issue, but the local council are not the thing to worry about, they will do fuck all, it's not their issue but the landlords.
Anyways, what uni you going to and would you consider not going to this new flat, I mean think of the money you cud save and enjoy life, not having to earn so much and work as hard in some shite job.
I was in a good job (finance) and worked hard, but in the end I packed it all in, not worth it. You work and slave away for rent, which is your biggest monthly expense and not even the most fun expense (say like travel, skunk and nites out).
Uni is hard and stressful, if you pay rent you will have to get part time work and on top of your uni and studies, you won't have a life really, given all your hours will be you doing other peoples work and orders.
Unless your in some shitty contract already, fuck renting and live with us.
The place is near and east to get to cen. london, on the tube link etc...
I won't post our address in public yet, that could fuck things up.

no :P
i meant to quote my post because i was going to post again. but i must have pressed EDIT rather than quote
i'd said "i'll come visit" or something like that. so i was gonna quote it and say "if thats alright of course.
but then i realised i'd edited it, so got rid of the stuff i wrote earlier and all my post said was "if thats alright of course" which obviously didn't make any sense. si i said shit, and went back and edited it again and now it's back to the original post! :P
and yes, i'm stupid
sorry for the mix up.

i'm going to roehampton, doing film studies. i would but it's my first year so i'm gonna be living on the uni campus and it's just something i want to experience.
it's only for the 1st year, then after that i'll have to find something off campus. so if your still living there and there is room in a years time then i'll move in. it would be quality to live somewhere with fellow leftists and for free. :D
about the post i above, i said 'shit' because i messed up the post and deleted what i'd written, nothing to do with you :P

Wow I want to go to London now :)
It only costs like 40 dollars or something from where I live. Cool.
Yeah, it looks like a really nice place. I think we should take pictures showing how it was before and after.
Sounds like a good idea! It would be great to see it in visual.
I really hope we manage to keep this place.
Good luck :)
Mind if I stay over if I happen to visit London for a few days?

We're setting up a squat locally soon. Well, a social centre. We've may already have and printers, desks, beds ect. But if not we would like to have these sorted out before we move in, I take it you guys have done the opposite :P
But it'll be interesting to see how long you hold it for. I'll come visit next weekend maybe, and help out if you need it. But I have dedications elsewhere...
You guys been in touch with other social centres in london?

Sounds really good. I guess the stereotype of squatters living in squalid rundown conditions is just that, a baseless stereotype.
We do have a lot of work to do. We will eventually have a replace a rather large window because both it and the frame is missing, and doubtless we'll need new furniture as well.

We seem caught up in over-planning at the moment, there are a few potential buildings. But basically we're going to store the furniture ect elsewhere until we take the building over. We will be running a cafe, daycare centre for kids and bicycle repair shop. We also don't want it to become some punk venue hangout, so we will avoid gigs.
Unfortunately no, do you know what they can do to help?
Advice mainly. I reccomend going to TheSquare (link in signature) don't bother e-mailing they're lazy as fuck. Just go ring the bell and ask for coffee, tell them your setting up a squat and ask if they can help out atall. They're all nice people, really.

This place sounds really cool, great idea.
I can get to London anytime in August if you need some help clearing the place up for a few weeks, but I have to go back to 6th Form in September.
And maybe I'll be at uni in 2007, if it's still going and you don't mind/there is room, it'd be an accommodation option.

It would be cool to see some photos of the place. Maybe just of the inside so no one could identify what building it is?

Basicly so long as you dont break in (or they cant prove you broke in ;) ) then it isnt classed as a criminal offence and the police cant get involved. The owner will have to go through a long court process to get you evicted, and I hear there are many loopholes regarding this process

Hello,
well it's early days yet but here is two pics we have so far but there are more to come that will show you the size of the place, we think it sleep 15-20 comfortably, maybe 30 at a sqeeze though if people arn't sleeping and we just use the pub for free drinks then maybe 100 people can get in there for an event or drinks or whatever.

On the law subject, beware of converting it back into a functioning pub. They may not get your for squating, but it is so much easier to get you on licensing.
And on an artistic point, I'd put extra effort into the appearance of the main room. If the cops do come around, they'd be shocked to silence to see the brass gleaming, and their relfection in the polish of the wood. Make the place better than it ever was :)
Wish I was in the UK. Though I have no interest in squating there (love my appartment), I'd be round with a load of tools and cleaning supplies. I love DIY.

I got some more pictures of our new place!
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/Squat/DSC00977.jpg
This is our front door. We just need to get a plane so it shuts properly.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/Squat/DSC00978.jpg
This what you see when you come through the front door. We've only been here for a couple of days so it's still a bit messy, but it'll look a lot better by the end of the week.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/Squat/DSC00979.jpg
Looking to the right, this what you see. That's the bar :)
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/Squat/DSC00980.jpg
This the the room where the bar is. We've now closed up the window since we've opened the front door.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/Squat/DSC00981.jpg
Still in the bar, looking towards the room which leads to the garden.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/Squat/DSC00982.jpg
The cellar, where they used to keep the booze. It's empty unfortunately :P
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/Squat/DSC00984.jpg
The stairs, which lead up to the landlord's quarters. They'll be clean before the end of the week.
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/Squat/DSC00985.jpg
The top of the stairs, it smells a bit skanky up there but a little bit of incense should fix that :)
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/Squat/DSC00986.jpg
The landlord's kitchen, as opposed to the pub's kitchen. It's an awful mess :(
http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j99/NoXion604/Squat/DSC00987.jpg
One of the bedrooms, which should be really cosy once we get it cleaned up.
There's more, but I fear this post has enough pictures of it already. It would be really nice if anyone who's interested in joining us would contact us ASAP. Wish us luck!

Yea I've got your contact details, when I say your, I mean Farlefts, I have your mobile number. I'll text you when I get some more credit, and, urm, money in general. Busy this weekend but after that I will come down and say hi to you all. See if I can help with the process, although I've never squatted I've done plenty of building/clearing/decorating. And it'll be useful to be involved somewhat in a squatting project before we start our own one locally I guess, at least as far as your politics/practical ideas go.

Can't wait to see it when it's all properly done, that could turn into a prettu good leftist squat palace.
But erm... don't you think you should edit or delete the picture of the outside of the pub, where you can see a bit of the sign? It could give clues to your location, anyone can read this board, militant fascists and such. I'm sure with someone in the know or a bit of research, they could figure out where you are?

Hehe, those were old prices.
Now drinks will be served for free, we are not a pub, but an occupied space and a soon to be social centre.
Heck, we are setting up a space were the laws of the British capitalist state and the rules of the capitalist system cease to be. We aim to use money as little as possible, hopefully to a near zero rating. ;)

Okay, I'll see about coming up....I should be able to tell you, for definite, whether I could come for a visit by, say, Saturday. But, after that, I'd need to try and get my travel arrangements sorted and all that. But I definitely fancy it....if only to have the experience of getting pissed with three fellows as fine as yourselves. <_<
As for the leaks, if they're small, all you'll need are a few sockets, some solder, some flux and a blowtorch. I'd get the stuff myself, but I'm I don't fancy travelling on the Tube with a large bag and a blowtorch. If you get what I mean.

We have water now. Water bill is just under £13.00 a month so per person thats next to nothing.
As for the electricity, we will sort it then contact the electricity people and get connected.

Yeah, I discussed this with Anarchism Now on MSN. I think that I will take up the offer (unless my mother is very annoyed. I may be 18 but it is still probably a good idea not to really piss off family), most likely. I will be returning from Sweden on 20th of August. I am thinking I should meet you people soon after that, which would hopefully be before the accomodation applications for Uni. That is, of course, assuming that I have not flunked my exams of June.

Dam, that place looks like it really could be something nice.
Too bad I don't live in England.
Anyway, do you know why the place is abandoned? otherwise you might face some serious problems: we squatted a place a while ago, but it was filled with asbestos.

Asbestos really isn't that much of a problem unless you are putting it up (shipyard workers), or taking it down. Once it is in place the health effects are minimal. I lived in an old stone house that had asbestos pipe insulation and asbestos floor tiles. No health risk until you rip them out and remodel.
A bit like lead paint. Just don't lick the walls.

What are the squatting laws like in the UK?
Basicly so long as you dont break in (or they cant prove you broke in ;) ) then it isnt classed as a criminal offence and the police cant get involved. The owner will have to go through a long court process to get you evicted, and I hear there are many loopholes regarding this process [/b]
Not anymore. It's now relatively easy/quick for landlords to get possession orders.
Also, a squat is only a legal squat when you have placed a Section 6 somewhere in the building and one person has to be there at all times otherwise anyone can enter and change the locks, get rid of your stuff etc.
A section six basically states that the building is under occupation and that there is at least one person on the premises at any time who objects to anyone entering.
The Advisory Service for Squatters (ASS) is very helpful: http://www.squatter.org.uk/

A property developer owns it, he bought it but the local residents managed to block the development plans (whatever they include I dont know).
The reason the residents blocked the developer is because in the garden there are 3 protected trees apparently (I wouldnt be able to tell, trees look the same to me).
It was even the local residents that contacted A.S.S. and asked for squatters! So it's good to know we will have support from them.
The place is a 5 min bus ride from Ealing Broadway tube station which is on the district and central lines.
I will post pics as soon as I can though I don't know when that will be.

Hello,

Some in the squat work, some have student loans, some claim JSA and some are living off money saved up from previous jobs.
Access to the internet via i-cafe just untill we get the internet up and running at home (most likely in two weeks time).
I cant speak for the others but personally yes I will be moving from one squat to the other each time we get evicted.

Just one question, how the hell do you have power and water? If you've hooked yourself up to the grid won't they detect that?

You can get them from the normal companies, by paying for them.
The building will most likely already be connected to the water/gas/electricity system, all you have to do is contact the relavent company.
They don't care if you own the house or not, provided you pay them.

Does anyone have links to information on squatting / property appropriation / homesteading in the United States? I know for the most part it doesn't exist, but I'm interested in seeing what is out there.

Bad luck Comrades!
May I ask, what was the reason the judge ruled against you being that he had sided with the residents on the other occasions?
Did you bring up the part about someone smashing in your side door? What became of that?
Anyway some very good comradely luck with all your future endeavors and plans to find a new squat! If I lived in the UK I would certainly try to help but unfortunately I do not.

He said that in the case of zanrose against the squatters the residents issues where irrelevent, it's a simple case of ownership of property which zanrose can prove and there is no question mark over that ownership.
So they kicked us out.
Zanrose came round on Monday, they sent a guy round and said we wernt supposed to be there and we had to leave, I just told him to go get the bailiffs so he got in his car and drove off.
Then about an hour and half later they sent a different guy, he said the same thing, as did i and he get in his car and drove off.
Odd, Brentford county court say it could be a month before the bailiffs come round.

I used to be a student in manchester and they had a squat on oxford rd (it was more of a leftist pub as there was noone living there but they sold really nice lager) Fucking cops closed it down after a year though so good luck holding onto yours. Are you lot members of UCL SWSS by any chance?
How you gonna heat the place now that the cold season's coming in. This is why you couldnt get me out of renting, im too fond of my mod cons.

It's not primitive! We had in Ealing, electricity, heating, washing machines, microwaves, gas, dvds, computers etc.
I am not really aware of the current situation, as Anarchism_Now said, I dont squat anymore because that Ealing squat was lost to the owner :(
NoXion and Anarchism_Now have a new squat I think in central London, but one of them will have to fill you in.
No, none of us are or were members of UCL SWSS.

ah, i'd like to hear how things go eh. i only recently found out how crappy things are here for squatters. you need to live there for something like 19 years? before you have ownership. i'd have to look that up. oh well, i'm still at home right now anyway. that'll do until i finish school ;)

Actually in oz you can only ever claim 'adverse possession' (i.e. ownership by squatting) on what is called 'old systems title' (and as you said, this requires proof of occupation for a long period of time).
To compound this problem, unfortunately 'old systems title' is only for extremely old properties, as over a century ago the colonial authorities introduced a new title system, 'torrens title', which colonial property was then converted to. Under the descendant of the torrens title system it is impossible to claim 'adverse possession', to do so you would actually need the permission of the owner, and in some cases the owners of surrounding property.
Moreover, say in sydney for example, the only 'old systems title' that exists are really small parcels of land that are unuseable, like small lanes or sections of lanes that run by other properties, nothing you could live on.
I'm also pretty sure that if you did claim adverse possession on some 'old system title' the government would request you pay back taxes on the property (land tax etc.), which only makes the idea even more unrealistic.
In oz squatting IS feasible, but ownership via squatting is not, which is no real loss, considering the difficulty in maintaining a squat for 19 years ;)

So do the government let you get away with squatting or do they crack down real fast?

I think it's more up to the owner of the property, isn't it?
Also, AFAIK there was an act brought in in England and Wales in 2002 that says that after 10 years of squatting, you have to inform the owner of the property. As the statutory time limit for having you removed is 12 years, claiming adverse possession is very hard indeed.

That's how i understand it too. So if you ever squat, and have it for (what I heard is 15 - its been slowly increasing in the past 5 or so years) 15 or whatever years, the owner has most likely forgotten about it anyway...
Why pay the back tax?

haha true. i talked to my stepdad about this last night. he was still saying that it is someone else's property. and i said property is theft. if it's unoccupied or unused space why not put it to better use?!

It's a northern state in Australia. It's kinda close to the equator near the top. Massive state. Lots of nice beaches, mountains etc. Home of Steve Irwin and the Great Barrier Reef.

You forgot racists!
QLD is the 'deep south' of the australian continent, and that's not just a cutesy comparison, a part from being probably the most racist state in oz (though its a tight race with the NT), like the southern USA, it was home of plantations (lotsa sugar), where Indigenous peoples and Pacific Islanders were slaved for the QLD colony.

No. There was a ridiculous, waste of time, court case against the snootiest solicitor ever presided over by this judge who must have been hand picked from fucking toff land. Apparently there were a number of other places which also had problems.
The robber barons who own derelict properties do not seem particularly keen on having them used.
