With everything going on in the Middle East right now, i'm ashamed to know so little. Can anyone recommend some good books, here in the U.S. we only seem to get Israel's point of view on things so it's hard to come by information that isn't corrupted. I keep hearing terrible things about people but I have a limited knowledge of what their history or culture is and I want to understand more about the region.

I've had Robert Fisk's "The Great War for Civilization" sitting on my shelf for months now. I can never seem to pick up the courage to tackle it.

I'd recommend Edward Said: Peace and Its Discontents, The Politics of Dispossession, and Orientalism.
