my schools language department is apparently planning a trip to mexico, and there is some talk of going to chiapas as part of this trip. obviously this can be done, but can travellers go to the Zapatista controlled areas of chiapas? and if so, what needs to be done beforehand?

Yes, it's possible. I know someone personally, who spent a month or so in Chiapas, and have met plenty of activists who have even worked over there. From what I understand it's pretty straight forward. You don't need to undergo any official process, it's like visiting any other part of the country. However, it's better not to shout to the authorities where you're heading once you arrive in mexico, and as is the case regardless of where you are going, make sure the transport is reliable.
and good luck

Hi Zapata,

You can certainly go to some of the main towns in Chiapas (San Christobal etc) without too much difficulty. To go to some of the outlying areas in Chiapas is more complex as you pretty much need a letter of introduction to some of the Zapatista municipalities to show that you can be trusted to do certain things - however, I'm guessing as its a school trip you won't be venturing outside the main towns.

Best of luck though.

so as i understand it, going to the parts of chiapas controlled by the mexican government is the same as going anywhere else in the country. so what exactly does one need to enter the areas controlled by the zapatistas?
