EU convention to unveil charter of rights

Britain was today awaiting the publication of further proposals on an EU constitution, including a legally binding charter of fundamental rights likely to be opposed by the prime minister.

Mr Blair is likely to voice opposition to giving the charter of fundamental rights - which was introduced in 2000 as a declaration of people's basic freedoms - legal status, fearing it would increase worker's rights in the UK to comparable levels across continental Europe.
Striking workers could then go to the European court of justice for the final say on the right to strike.
Most of the fundamental rights for citizens set out in the charter merely repeat long-standing council of Europe principles on human rights and individual freedoms, to which every EU country and nearly 30 others are signatories.
But it goes further on workers' rights and social policy.
