If the president were to be killed, the situation coudl easily be spun as a terrorist attack on America. People who are not normally in favor of Bush & Friends would vote the party they believe woudl give them the most security, and usually this is the Republican Party.
Really though it doesn't matter which party gets more votes as they are both right-wing capitalist parties. After all, Bill Clinton (a Democrat) signed the Defense of Marriage Act (marriage bet. one man and one woman, basically discouraging gay marriage) and embarked on his own wars. It's more important who controls the people in power (business, the military, intelligence) and not who is in power (Democrats or Republicans), given that they report to the same people.

I know the Senate has just approved it but I have only heard that Bush has threatened to veto it but hasn't done it yet though I'm sure he will.

So far, he's only threatened to do it. But you're right, he will without a doubt veto the thing.

Why not in the past? What about the intimidation and punishments directed against "heretics" such as Galileo?

Could someone explain the whole issue of stemcells?

Could someone explain the whole issue of stemcells?
Stem cells can be used to create any other type of cell and therefore are quite useful in the regrowing tissues. However controversy arises because using the current technology, a stem cell line may require the destruction of an embryo or at least the removal of embyonal cells.

Hmm....there has been a strong reaction from the science community against Bush's decision. It's embarrassing how there's such a large religious lobby but a small science one.

What shits me is the argument he gave. They gathered all these kids who were the result of IVF (I'm assuming from 'excess' embryos) and basically he made his speech saying "if we had stem cell research these kids wouldn't be here.
That's the worst reasoning EVER. Seriously, there are generally quite a few excess embryos, so there are enough to use some for research and hang on to a few. And how do you retrospectively look at some kids and say that you'd miss them if there wasn't even a possibility that they'd be born? Sorry if that's a horrible sentence, but it's a difficult idea to express!

Basically, Bush believes that every embryo is a potential life and that it should not be tampered with.

The illegalization of stem cell research will give an economic edge to other nations over the US. So it isn't really a bad thing. If the bourgeoisie rulers of the US want to slit their own throats, then let them.

What would the betting be that if Bush (or someone he new) was afflicted with any of the problems they are trying to cure (or at least help) he would jump tat the chance. It is not murder i am fairly sure that the cells they use have been given up willinly, also it depends on your view of when life begins and when the soul enters the body. It sounds to me as if Bush is just trying to keep in with the majority of people who voted for him. This could be a great leap in science if it was allowed to go ahead - i do understand that the whole situation is a bit ickey- but so is everything in this world - if people put a lot of resaerch into "normal" everyday happenings in their lifes i am sure they wouldn't like what they find. But is up to the oppiouns and the mighty powers that be to decide.

Well, I suppose that his belief is his belief, and he has a right to it. Though I disagree with his views, all I can do is hope that his policies don't fuck up the world too much.
Besides, he is meant to be a representation of the majority of United States citizens, and, quite unfortunately, he is!
Stem cell research is fine, in my view. I am against killing only sentient beings, and human forms of life below the fetus are not sentient. If they are killed, you are not mkilling a true human.

Is that including or exclusing foetuses?

I think he is excluding them.
Despite Bush's veto, individual states such as California are taking the time to back up stem cell ressearch.

guys, there is nothing wrong with religion..its just the believers i have a beef with..they halt science.. not the religion..wanna know how i figure? ok, well i am a christian and yes i do believe in communism/socialism..so on.. the thing is im studying to become a doctor..these stem cells may become the next medical breakthough that i would have to work with..see people need to know whats going to aid progression. me as a christian would back down and allow it..because religion and politics shouldn't mix...in most religions "god" give you a free choice what to do. therefore you do what you feel is right..and stem cell research seems right to me.. look at venezuela..there are so many religious people but they know when to say, "hey, our situation (life for all) sucks.." and its needs to change no matter what. and i respect those people.

Mr Bush has said he would veto the bill on the grounds that it giving public finance for research that involves the destruction of human embryos.
Yes, because it’s so destructive to have embryos that would be indefinitely frozen or thrown out anyway actually serve some real medical purpose.

"The president believes strongly that for the purpose of research it's inappropriate for the federal government to finance something that many people consider murder. He's one of them," Mr Bush’s spokesman Tony Snow said.
OMG, What bullshit. Murder?
That reminds me, I was killing Bush soon. Gotta go :D
