"The Australian Arabic Committee for Solidarity with Palestinian and Lebanese people will organise a rally against the Israeli agression this coming Saturday, 22 July. The rally will start 12 noon from Hyde Park, which will march to UN comission.

Please come and send a message against the barbaric acts of Israeli army: against killing of civilians and destruction of infrastructure and against the measures of collective punishment."

Haha, that was my plan :P

But I'll be there. Maybe this time there'll be an actual march, rather than it being cancelled at the last moment.

Oh, I'm going up to Sydney tomorrow but won't be there until around 2PM, will that be too late? I'd like to go, though.

UTS is right near central station, right? I might just head on over, even if I can't be there for all of the fun! But yeah, I know what you look like, were you there on Saturday? the David Hicks rally? I think I remember seeing Mujer Libre at the refugee rally a couple of weeks ago, as well. Though, I was too shy to say anything :)

hi i am a lebanese teen and im living in lebanon. i cannot explain in words how i feel about what is going on. im currently in all of this and i cannot get out of my country without making a mess of everything. israel has been harsh and hizballah arent any better in fact i greatly despise them for starting it. but must this happen to our country again. just two days ago sean paul the rapper as about to make his appearance in beirut, it went from the most positive boost in our economy to war and for this i blame both sides israel and hizballah and im asking for the help of everyone outside. people are having troubling getting out and the american embassy will not get me or anyone else out. they take too long and ask for too much money as they DO NOT state on the news.
what do you think about all this? our little country always the fighting zone for the arab world and we are the ones who suffer
thank you sincerly sergio

It's nice to have comrades from within the actual situation to get involved in discussion. Im sure most people here agree the Hizbollah are also just as bad as the Israeli army. Feel free to register, and discuss these issues in depth.

The one at hyde park? I was there too (with Mujer Libre, in a black hoody with green patch on the front) - are you a friend of chris? I know two of chris' friends or two people he knows were at the event - were you wearing black with a black n white circle-a patch on your leg? I know i remember seeing too crusty anarcho guys wrestling around and was thinking about going up and talking to em but was to shy to say anything :)

NOTE: The venue for Saturday's rally has now changed - it is no longer at Hyde Park.

The correct details are 12pm at Town Hall. (Also, note that the train system is gonna be a mess, so plan you travelling in advance).

Even with likely bad weather, this should be a fairly decent sized rally.

hi all. we have gotten word that there are likely to be up to 400 police, including cops on horses. since there are likely to be many people 'of middle eastern appearance', we suspect they may come down hard.

i'm going to be a legal observer, so far i only know of one other (who will be coming at 1:30pm) - if anyone you know gets into trouble with the cops, find someone with a bright yellow or orange legal observer sticker and give them the arrestee's details. if you're going alone, find a legal observer beforehand and take down their mobile number.

peace out and see ya tomorrow!

Thousands protest in Sydney

July 22, 2006 - 3:23PM

A Sydney protest against Israeli attacks on Lebanon saw between 10,000 and 20,000 people marching through the city.

Demonstrators began gathering at Town Hall in the Sydney CBD about noon (AEST) today, later making their way down George Street.

Police said more than 10,000 people turned up while organisers put the number at closer to 20,000.

Protesters carrying coffins and chanting "no war" marched to Martin Place.

Toddlers and young children wearing t-shirts with slogans like, `Stop killing the babies' were escorted by parents carrying Australian and Lebanese flags.

A Lebanese-Australian woman who gave her name only as Diana, cried as she spoke of her family in Lebanon.

"They are murdering children and burying them under rubble," she said.
"Something has to be done about this.

"I've got my mum and dad in Lebanon, my grandfather up in the mountains and my brother and his family were lucky to escape.

"It's very horrifying there are kids living on one piece of bread the whole day and no water."

Former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mamdouh Habib and the spiritual leader of Australia's Muslim community, Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali, were among some high-profile people who rallied to show their support.

The protest wound up peacefully shortly after 2pm and crowds began slowly dispersing.

Organisers thanked demonstrators for their good behaviour and applauded police efforts to control the rally.

Earlier, organisers stressed the protest would be a peaceful one. They warned demonstrators not to burn flags.

"For the sake of everyone and for the sake of the people we are trying to support (those in Lebanon) - they don't want this to be violent. They have had enough violence," an unnamed organiser told the crowd at the start of the rally.

maynard will you be there?
I was there! I couldn't see you, though, it was a bit too packed to be able to find anyone but it was great, despite the conservative nature of the leaderships, handing out Australian flags and then telling people they weren't to be burnt  I would say there was close to 20,000 people overall, a lot came late because of our shitty train service but a great rally overall, I wonder if there will be anymore, this week?

I did a little round up of some of the protests worldwide in the last week:
10,000 in Melbourne
1,000 in Berlin
600 in Adelaide
300 in Canberra
100,000 in Yemen
More than 10,000 in Madrid
10,000 in Dearborn, Michigan, a city with a population of 100,000!
1,000 in Washington DC
500 in Vienna
Daily Demonstrations in their thousands in Cairo, usually around 3,000, with police violence taking place daily, with the confiscation of all flags and banners.
Several Thousands in Tripoli, Libya
2,000 in Amman, Jordan called by Unions. Many arrests
Several hundred in Indian Controlled Kashmir, police used batons and tear gas
Rallies in 11 different cities in Pakistan, including two in Islamabad
2,000 in Dhaka, Bangladesh with some also in the Kataban and Pulana Pultan areas
6,000 in Jakarta
300 in Sadr City, Iraq
4,000 in Kabala, Iraq
Hundreds in Baghdad
100 in Moscow
Hanover, Germany 5,000. Local authorities banned the display of the Iranian flag
Hundreds in Boston
Hundreds in Guateng province, South Africa. Bigger rally this Friday
1,500 in New York
400 in Kuwait
700 in Amsterdam
Montreal 1,000 on two days notice
2,000 in Toronto along with protests in 20 other Canadian cities
10,000 in London as well as rallies in Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle and Sheffield
1,000 in Rome
Two rallies in Athens, both with 2,000 each
2,000 in Ramallah
Thousands in Syria
Swedish activists are blocking the entry to the Swedish foreign ministry, demanding that the Swedish government act against Israeli aggression. Police were unsuccessful in trying to remove them.

Also, there were rallies in Istanbul, Freiburg, Copenhagen and San Jose, Malaysia. I haven't heard any numbers. But if anyone has any additions/corrections, feel free to do so!

I fucking well hope not. They are a legitimate national liberation organisation who are revered as heroes by a large section of the lebanese population for kicking the israelis out.

They aren't the same as Hamas, who are a terrorist organisation, Hizballah concentrate mostly on millitary targets.

Their was a demonstrantion on saturday in Auckland and I was pleased to join in the popular chant "victory to Hizballah"!
