Thought you guys might like this, I saw a mention of it this morning on foxnews at a diner.
G8 protests (http://www.rferl.org/featuresarticle/2006/07/ed33ab83-1344-4f5d-9b04-073abb06b800.html)

It was great seeing the anarchist/communist flags waving boldly on FOXnews channel :)

ok, this is going to sound really dim. Why are people protesting against the summit? why not just try to tell the "leading industrial economies" what they should be doing (helping Africa, that sort of thing) rather than protesting against them meeting?

wait - nevermind, I found the answer in the article. (I only read half when I had made this post).

ok, yeah, I agree that's really stupid. 8 countries deciding the fate of the world.

When I was first reading your reply I was thinking...... WTF?
If you are comfortable for these 8 people speaking for you and dictating the policies of your country... you go right ahead. In fact, you might want to join the WTO message bpards, you may enjoy them more.

yeah sorry, I didn't think about it like that - I just thought "countries meeting up to try and do good for the world why are people stopping this rather than trying to help direct where the money goes?"

I got it now though; bloody ridiculous. :( still, it's to be expected given the state of the world.

Which countries are the 8 because the article doesn't say?
america, UK, russia, france, germany, australia, italy....?

The G8 is the antitheses of our movement. It is an elite that represents an elite. The 8 most dangerous people in the world are currently gathered in St Petersburg pretending to give a shit about thousands of people dying everyday from starvation. They don't give a flying fuck about anybody but the scumbag rich elite they represent but the Bob Geldoff's of this world help delude people that they do.

The godfathers of capitalism;

France's President Jacques Chirac, Italy's PM Romano Prodi, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, and US President George W. Bush and Putin for Russia.

Does anyone outside the revolutionary leftist movement actually pay attention to the G8 protests? People have come to expect this as a regular thing, and nothing to be concerned about. Surely this undermines the entire premise of having a protest in the first place?

well, people in st. petersburg and nearby parts of russia are paying attention, you can be sure of that. and thats one of the most constructive aspects of a major mobilization if carried out correctly: giving people in certain communities a taste of an international collective endeavor of resistance. i think that most certainly has a great value. a little protest in some of the member countries here or there doesnt hurt, esp if it gets media coverage.

as for inside, i wonder what guys like romano prodi, who is ostensibly a socialist/marxist social democrat of some sort, do in these cases? if hes as much a fraud as any other, then im sure he gets along just as well, but if he actually has any real ideological and practical commitment to marxism or socialism, wonder if he tries to insert it into the discourse (tho italy is one of the lesser members, to be sure)

The forces of reaction have gained a good deal of ground since then, and other events have put some dents in our movement.

Yeah shut down the G8 so they can just take a helicopter to another location ;) We'll leave the free trade protests to the South Koreans, they do it right.

Start unionizing for a syndicalist union if your country has one if you want to take part in economic struggle. Having little "protests" isn't changing anything. Having a mass workers organization that can have a general strike will change things.

Western Europeans, and even North Americans, were doing pretty well until 2001, actually.

Fuckin wacky Austalians. I'll have to make it down there sometime. Is it true that you guys like Americans accents as much as I love Aussie ones?

Sorry for the Chit Chat type diversion. I'll try to contain my cyber lust to the appropriate forums.
