View Full Version : Smaller Things You Dislike About Capitalism

So aside from widespread poverty, famine, inequality etc. what about capitalism do you despise? What bothers you?
Personally I find these particular bothering:
* Copyright
* That video games, CD's, DVD's etc. cost a lot of money, despite it being only a cover, some paper and a CD, which probably cost a little over a dollar to produce and transport
* 30 day trials and so on, on products I need all the time, not just for 30 days
* Commercials
* Having, with already a limited amount of money, to actually buy things that I need to survive; food, water and so on.
And you?

Cheaply made goods that make you keep buying that product over and over again.
Infomercials....ARGHHHH!

1 - Fashion shows - What a croc of crap.
£3000 for a satin shirt and a pair of tartan trousers????
£1000 for a pair of glitzy flip-flops????
Pleeeease
2 - Phil Collins - need I say more?
3 - Parades for the Royal family - A lot of would-be toffs and jingoistic morons falling over themselves to please their 'Queen' <_<
A lot of soldiers standing around all day in stupid uniforms and ridiculous fur hats, until they faint.....No thank you.

adverts.
I hate all adverts in general whether tv, internet (got adblock :D) or just in the street, however I think loan and compensation adverts should get a special mention as being quite possibly the most annoying things ever invented.
No I'm not in debt. no I don't want you to "get me out of debt" by lending me yet more money so that instead of being free in 15years time I'll be paying it off until the day I die and probably until my children die too.
"hurt because you weren't looking where you were going? well call us and we'll rob someone else blind in order to satisfy your greed. And then, we'll turn around and rob you blind too".
all they're doing is robbing people who are naive enough to fall for it. They also encourage greed and materialism.
gaargh!
*bangs keyboard*
also agree strongly with Si Pinto.
Maybe add in the Proms too though - yet more superficial, shallow toffs.

The problem with this question is whenever i think of something 'small' i realise that it's really a part of a much bigger problem.
Take advertising - the ads are there to hawk products (little ick), which facilitates consumerism (medium ick) which is a facet of capitalist society (the big ick) :P

nothing against the music for me either - just against the whole pseudo-intellectual type of people who go to the Proms.
It's a bit like the Royal Ascot culture. sitting around sipping champagne and eating strawberries and cream.

I think you may not understand:
"the Proms" and "proms" are different things.

Classical music shindigs they have in the UK. Not to be confused with the US school shindigs. And that's the extent of my knowledge on the proms.

"Specials" at supermarkets, where the prices are half or even less of what they are usually priced at. Just shows you how much they are actually paying for it.
When I worked at an office supply store in high school, we sold those plastic desk mats for like $30. Guess how much the store paid for them? Less than 20 cents (depending on model).

as ComradeOm says it's like a big classical music thing in London (I think London...). Absolutely full of toffs dressed up in their best gear, and one of those events that people go to "to be seen" there rather than any other reason.

Sex becomes a marketed product -e.g. Prostitution, porn-.
The stupidity of the consumer.
The consumerization of Pop culture.

Materialism
Many Americans judge others by what they have and don't have
Young ppl are more concerned with "bling bling" than in improving their surroundings
Just because u have 20 inch chromed wheels on your Escalade doesn't mean your better than me <_<

Fucking hotdogs are 8 to a pack, and hot dog buns are 10!
You'd have to buy ten packs of hot-dogs, and 8 backs of buns to get it right!
Fucking pigs...
And I also hate how Goofy is a dog that wears pants, talks and drives a car yet Pluto is just a dog! What the fuck!

Or five packs of hotdogs and four packs of buns.

The softening of the word "revolution". For instance, Chevrolet's motto is "an American revolution", and practically every other product is advertised as "revolutionary", as if they had any idea what a frickin revolution is.

Actually, it makes me wonder. If things get copyrighted more and more, then soon, people will not be able to do anything since everything is owned by one or the other corporation. Then what will be different from living in a Soviet-like state?

And you?
When cutting the grass you find you have a shit lawnmower because either 1) its been made cheaply to increase profit, or 2) you just cant afford a decent one cause they fucking inflate the price of it.
When buying a toaster from Argos, it fucking packs up after a day of use (I know it can be brought back - thats not the point).
blah blah blah.......................I think im just too aware of how shit everything is  .
Knowing - on a daily basis, that the worker must settle with the most shitty product is the most annoying thing for me.
especially when iv to live with it.
All them rich fucks with so much space they dont know what to do with it.

Agreed unless we can also discuss how capitalism affects us on an individual scale.
