I'm a huge metal fan myself, but I have a soft spot for some Reggae, anyone else like any of it? Or hate it?
At the moment I quite like Matisyahu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHdQX0jPvNg), he's an American Orthodox Jew singing reggae-style music.
And of course, there is no beating this... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zVuG2qQj4s).

I like Peter Tosh and Hepcat. I used to listen to Matisyahu but not much anymore.

Yeah, I'm a fan of it.
Bob Marley is the major reggae musician that I can think of at this point.

I like the early skinhead reggae from the late 60s until the mid 70s. Some dub is ok like the stuff produced by King Tubby & Lee Perry. I'm not too keen on the new reggae though. I'm more of a fan of the roots of reggae - ska & rocksteady.

Love it all especially Barrington Levy. I remember when Matisyahu was all unknown.. The other day I walked into American Eagle and they were playing him. I was kinda sad.
Oh and Musical Youth too! :D
Yabby You, especially the Conquering Lion album

Big reggae fan, i can tolerate rasta lyrics but christian rock (or christian anything) i find irritating as fuck, probably for a lot of reasons, one of which is that a lot of reggae musicians/bands tend to have some sort of political edge. Hell, even the king of love songs, sorry Crown Prince of Reggae, Dennis Brown, had a song called 'Revolution'! :P
Let's see, my fav roots era reggae musicians/bands are (in order):
The Wailers (duh)
Bob Marley
Peter Tosh
Steel Pulse
Burning Spear
Jacob Miller
The Abyssinians
Toots & The Maytals
Dennis Brown
Gregory Isaacs
Jimmy Cliff
Augusto Pablo
Black Uhuru
Fav. contemporary musicians/bands (all of which are from Aotearoa with the exception of the Sab Cats who are from oz) - in order:
Fat Freddy's Drop
Katchafire
Cornstone Roots
Trinity Roots
The Black Seeds
Kora
The Sab Cats
If you like roots reggae i suggest you check out some of the above, particularly Fat Freddy's Drop (though they are not roots reggae, they're fucking dope), and for roots sounds, Katchafire and Cornerstone Roots are probably the best.
Maytals are so good. The whole soul/ska thing is so wild.
I actually just started playing with a reggae band yesterday. Good times.

People really should give non-Bob Marley reggae a go, there is a very high chance that you will like it :)

People should stop idolizing Bob Marley
it's becoming sickening

I like reggae, but I am a big fan of Ska.
Bob Marley is idolized as the king of Reggae just as Elvis is the king of rock.
He started it all.

To say Elvis started rock and roll isn't doing Blues justice man.

Zero is right, Elvis didn't 'start' rock n' roll.
I reckon there is a similarity between Marley and Elvis though, they were both the first to popularised their respective genres for white american audiences.

Reggae isn't really my cup of tea, it doesn't do much for me. I find it quite dull to tell the truth. But I do enjoy Reggae nights at a club I frequent. The club (if you can call it that) specialises in alternative stuff.

I'm a little obsessed with reggae. I first heard Bob Marley when I was 14, after going to Jamaica when I was 16 I got into a lot deeper into it and kind of dropped the more well known Bob Marley/Peter Tosh/Toots and the Maytals stuff, though I still love all three.
I'm big into the Rocksteady era. Rocksteady was the point between the ska of the early 60's and the Rasta heavy Roots sound of the 70's. It's basically ska slowed down, but now as slow and heavy as roots.
My favorite bands of the time:
The Ethiopians
The Maytones
The Kingstonians
The Melodians
I especially reccomend the Ethiopians, one of the most underrated reggae vocal trios of all time.
I also love the heavy Roots stuff:
Yabby You
Culture
Hugh Mundell
Max Romeo
The Congos
The Heptones
The Mighty Diamonds
Big Youth
Everyone should go download the Congos' "Heart of the Congos" album. It's one of the most amazing things ever recorded, sounds like a reggae symphony. Victor, if you're reading this, I think you'd like it especially.
There's also a ton of leftist influenced reggae. Max Romeo is a Communist, Hugh Mundell's stuff is very political (Africa Must be Free by 1983 is a great album) and Burning Spear's stuff was also pretty political. Yabby You did a dub called "Straight to the Capitalist Head", Big Youth had a song on the same album called "Big Youth Fights Against Capitalism" (which I then made into a T-shirt).
Don't leave out Dub! Augustus Pablo, Lee Perry and King Tubby all have countless albums of solid Dub out there.
I think reggae is the greatest music of all time. Even the religious stuff still manages to incorporate a certain level of social/political consciousness. Generally the Rastas tend to focus on the unifying and rebelious aspects of Rasta rather than the actual relgious message.

Agreed, especially in his younger days, when his dreads were just growing out :D

Bob Marley would feel disrespected to be regarded as king of anything. To him only Jah is king. Not that I'm a Rasta but that's what I learned reading about Bob.

Love Reggae now, but used to hate it as I thought Reggae = Bob Marley and I'd heard the likes of "No Woman No Cry" so often they'd becoming boring and cliched. Still don't really listen to him, tbh...
Anyway, personal recommendations would be Steel Pulse's first couple of albums, Big Youth (Blood and Fire did a really good three CD set of his stuff), Linton Kwesi Johnson, Third World, Culture, U-Roy, I-Roy, Capleton's Alms House...
Anyone else got loads of the Trojan box sets? The Ska stuff is absolute quality!

I got a lot of those Trojan Box sets. You can download them all on Soulseek, just look up "Urban Rubble".

I've got a few of those Trojan boxset. Although they can normally be found in the sales I find them to be a bit hit and miss. And some of the recent ones (like the ska revival one) have been terrible. I find that the Studio One comps on the Soul Jazz label feature far better material.

Yeah, i've really gotten into reggae in the past year or so. Mostly old ska, though, close enough. I really like 2tone ska.
Bob Marley is too commercial. There's way more out there than him.
