View Full Version : Americans Polled Disagree With Government

I'm interested in writing up a little article on my blog about all the issues that Americans disagree with their government actions on, as expressed in polls. I know healthcare, details of Israeli-Palestinian issue, and the Terri Schiavo fiasco are three of them. Does anyone know of others? It's difficult to find the information because the corporate media doesn't report on polls which show americans disapproving of their government. So I'd appreciate if people could help me so I knew what I was looking for. Thanks.

Whoah, Americans is too much of a general term. You could find Americans that disagree with every action of the government.
Don't forget to add the Iraq war.

Well I of course don't mean any American, I mean the majority of Americans (>50%).
I did some research into some Gallup polls this morning, and all I learned is that most americans are retarded. I suppose it's just the result of getting bad information from the media though.

Yeah, I assumed so.
But there really aren't all that many polls. I think the sentiment against the war in Iraq is up there now and the sentiment against Bush in general is climbing up there. As for other issues, maybe the environment?

Yeah, those are some good topics to look into. What I'm really looking for is not disagreement with Bush in particular, but disagreement with former governments as well. So the majority of Americans wanting universal health care over an extended period yet both parties doing nothing about it is the kind of thing I was looking for. The unfortunate thing is that many of the polls that I've looked at ask about things like homosexual marriage, whether they believe in creationism or not, whether the media has a liberal or conservative bias, etc. and on all these polls americans are so embarassing wrong.
However, I have a lot of sources through my university (pretty much access to any resource that's online) so maybe I can find something interesting. Thanks for your suggestions Janus, I appreciate it :)

You might want to look up opinions on the size of the military budget, and other budgetary priorites like education. Also opinions on the minimum wage, taxation of the rich, and other economic issues with a clear class element.
Chomsky writes about this stuff sometimes, how large numbers of people in the U.S. sometimes hold opinions which are completely outside the official doctrinal system allowed into the media.
If you want to go historical: Before most wars there were often large majorities opposed to starting them; it's just that after the war starts there's a rally-around-the-flag effect.

Thanks Severian, that's exactly the kind of stuff I think I'll be able to find if I look hard enough. Listening to a Chomsky talk was actually how the idea came to me in the first place.
Thanks for the attention comrades.
