Isaac Deutscher anyone? Trot sympathizer, critic of Fourth International, biographies of Trotsky (3 volumes), and of Stalin, as well as journalistic analysis of Soviet Union. His biography of Trotsky has recently been re-published by Verso.

Worth reading; insightful and well-researched. From the vantage point of today, his attempt at a balanced view goes too easy on Stalin.

First rate thinker! His bio of Stalin is one of the best things I've read on USSR. Even when he's wrong, he's very very interested. His essay on 1984 The Mysticism of Cruelty is superb.
