Of course a year ago when I heard that American supported terrorist, Jonas Savimbi died I was very happy and content! But why has UNITA continued civil war against the government for so long anyway, I mean obviously after independence from Portugal in 1975 all three sides (the MPLA, UNITA and the FNLA) were all competing for power, but why continue. The UN itself agreed that the MPLA won the elections in 1992, UNITA had the opportunity to freely oppose dos Santos, the government was willing to overlook UNITA's well known past and present involvement in the drug trade, diamond smuggling and war crimes in exchange for peace and Angola really could have moved a head. So why keep on fighting? And why did so many Angolans (mainly in the countryside) rally loyally behind Jonas Savimbi for so long, even though he was murdering hundreds of thousands of civilians and ruining any chances that the country had to modernize? I mean what type of "Black Nationalist" would have lobbyed to Apartheid South Africa for military support, now there probably have been some minor crimes committed on the side of the Angolan government, but in comparison with the rightist guerrillas, Agostinho Neto and Jose Eduardo dos Santos have both been freakin choir boys. But what will happen now, Savimbi is dead, UNITA is falling apart and occupies less than 2% of Angola, thanx mainly in part to a motive set forward in the UN by Canada it is now illegal for any country to support UNITA and the whole world (even the United States) recognizes the MPLA as Angola's legitimate government and they were elected with a majority. So why does UNITA keep on doing what they do, its not like they'lle ever win, I mean the Red Brigades in Italy have a better chance of seizing power, am I wrong?
Out of curiousity, how come America doesnt label themselves as a terrorist state? I mean is not supporting the Contras, UNITA, RENAMO, the paramilitaries in Colombia, and the many Cuban, Iranian, Libyan, and even Cambodian terrorist opposition armies far worse than the groups that Libya and Cuba have aided, I mean how could support for the Sandinistas, the ANC, the Provos, the PLO, PFLP and FARC to name a few be called supporting terrorism?
