rioters bloc
11th July 2006, 16:52
currently, the communities of redfern, eveleigh, darlington, and waterloo are going through a period of redevelopment which takes control of the land out of the hands of the indigenous communities to which it was restored and into those of greedy, non-indigenous developers. redfern's block is not only an area which was returned to its rightful owners, but one of the only places left in the inner city which provides housing for people of low socio-economic background. along with newtown, this is set to change.
many activists, mostly indigenous activists, have set up camp on the block (next to the station) and have been living in tents for the past coupla months and more in protest at this development and also at howard's continuing genocide. i went there for the second time today, and the situation has gotten even worse - their tents leak when it rains, their fridge doesn't work, they can't afford adequate food. so if anyone is able to help at all, in any way they can, it would be greatly appreciated - even if it's just your presence. this is an issue which needs to be publicised as much as possible, and it's something which can be stopped NOW.
i'm gonna write an article on it for the student zine, i'll post it up here as well. if anyone can help make banners or design leaflets/posters that would be dope, we can print them out at my uni or the greens office in surry hills. or just drop by and have a chat, they're totally eager to talk.
