The mayor of a small Bergen County town is calling for a McDonald's boycott if the fast-food chain does not take down a Spanish-language billboard advertising iced coffee.
Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan said the advertisement is "offensive" and "divisive" because it sends a message that Hispanic im migrants do not need to learn English.

What a fucking idiot
You didn't even quote the dumbest parts.
The true things that bind us together as neighbors and community is our belief in the American flag and our common language
several residents called him to complain that it was in Spanish.
And check out this paternalistic piece of shit:
Bogota councilman George Shalhoub said he agreed with the mayor. He said the sign "belittles" Latinos.
"Something like this doesn't really help the Latino community," said Shalhoub, the son of Lebanese immigrants. "If they're going to assimilate they need to utilize the language of the country they're in. That billboard helps no one but McDonald's to sell coffee and hamburgers."

I skimmed the article for those dumb parts I posted earlier, but it just occured to me how utterly ridiculous the first one is. People are held together by belief IN A FLAG? What the fuck.

turns out, lonegan gave a speech to a group called the united patriots of america against immigrants back in the fall, and is the state leader of Americans for Prosperity, a pro-free trade group. thats funny, cuz most of the racist anti-immigrant fervor from grassroots groups is against some elements of free trade, like nafta, cafta, some big businesses. of course, the politicians mccarthyistically railing against immigrants often tend to be pro-free trade, tho they often hide that from the racists in the grassroots that theyre drumming up. UPA itself is a minuteman-like rightist group.
i must say, if theres one good thing about the minuteman project, it is how much they have mobilized pro-immigrant/left forces and shaken people to their senses. among other things, it has helped shift antifa and other groups a little bit away from the uberfringe nazis and towards racist anti-immigrant groups that have existed for years and have a greater impact, wider support, and more capacity to hurt people
