From the guardian
An Israeli minister said Israel was prepared to release Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the freedom of an Israeli soldier held captive for almost two weeks. It was the first public admission that Israel was willing to contemplate a prisoner exchange to free Corporal Gilad Shalit, who was captured during a raid on Israeli positions near Gaza on June 25.
Avi Dichter, the minister of public security, told a conference yesterday: "The release of the soldier Gilad Shalit is a must ... Israel will need to, after some time, release prisoners as a reciprocal gesture. Israel knows how to do this. Israel has done this more than once in the past."

After they've killed dozens, now they realize that swapping POW's is a good idea
I don't think this entire episode is quite over after they swap prisoners, if they do according to this
In order to get out of the current crisis, it is necessary that all parties restore calm on the basis of mutually stopping all military operations," Mr Haniya said in a statement released by his office in Gaza.
His Hamas government also urged Israel to open negotiations over the fate of Cpl Shalit, the Associated Press news agency reported.
But an Israeli government spokesman brushed aside the truce offer, saying Hamas must first release the soldier and halt all rocket attacks on Israel, the Associated Press news agency reported.
The Israeli army says all of the forces that entered northern Gaza late on Wednesday have left the town of Beit Lahiya and are now back in Israel.

Israel makes Jews look bad. We are a peaceful people, but the situation Israel has put itself in just makes the situation worse and worse.

Doesn't look like a swap may occur since Olmert has ruled it out. They have demanded the unconditional release of the prisoner and are continuing ther offensive and bombardment of Palestinian lands.

The US just vetoed a UN resolution condemning Isreal's actions in Gaza.
US vetoes UN resolution condeming Israel on Gaza (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060713/pl_nm/mideast_un_gaza_dc)
The explanation they gave was utterly ridiculous. How is it "untimely and outmoded" when the incursion is still continuing?

The Jewish Religion is just as violent as any other. Look at the 12 tribes of Isreal in the old testiment. Anyways, Isreal is a warmongering country I think the recent events prove this.
Kidnapping does not warrent a full scale invasion!

I hate to spoil the party, but Dichter is not a very important minister.
Ulmert and Peretz take all the decision in this subject, and they said nothing about releasing prisoners.
