"Baise-moi" directed by Coralie Trinh Thi.

You know "triumph of the will" was directed by a woman (first for a feature length). It’s funny the amount of reactionary films that make firsts, i.e. the film that standardized the "feature length" was a piece justifying white racism and kkk activities, it’s called “the birth of a nation”.

The Color Purple.

The virgin suicides if you just looking for pieces directed by women.

Hmm, two films that have some feministy type overtones, but are also problematic (makes for good discussions afterwards :P) are Monsoon Wedding and Whale Rider. I had to write a thesis-thing on Monsoon Wedding- so I'm bloody sick of it!

Yesterday- a very sad South African film about an HIV positive woman and her daughter. I'm sure I'll come up with more. Probably the minute I leave the thread!

lol thats pretty lame...assuming that women automatically politicze whatever they make in a feminist way, or that any woman's politics are inherently feminist or feminist simply by virtue of the fact that she's a woman, even in the case of something like the Virgin Suicides which was a pretty unpolitical film.

Anyways about the origional post, Iron Jawed Angels is an HBO produced film on the early 20th century women's voting rights movement in the US. It is supposed to be pretty good and dramatic and such although i've not seen it so i can't really say.

I wasn’t saying it was a political film or even feminist themed…because its not, I know that. I just mentioned it because it’s one of the few films I know was directed by a woman.

There’s no end of crappy Hollywood films were you have a female police officer chuckled at by her male colleagues only to latter close the case. But its kinda cliché boredom rehashed and served up again.

Well, I don't know anything about Aussie Fem libs, but here in America we have a movie called 'Iron Jawed Angels', quite a good movie I thought.

There's Iron Jawed Angels about the suffrage movement in the US, and what about Rabbit Proof Fence?

I don't know; it came to my mind because the story is centred around a couple of Aboriginal Australian girls who escape from a life of slavery.
