Subcomandante Marco Radio Interview on Democracy Now! (http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=06/07/06/1349226)
:)

Mexico's presidential election is still too close to call as electoral authorities work round the clock to verify vote tallies from Sunday's poll. Populist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador refused to accept preliminary results issued earlier this week alleging voter fraud. In a national broadcast exclusive, we air an excerpt of a radio broadcast with Zapatista leader Subcomandante Marcos who says he also received reports of electoral fraud

The bourgeois liberal Obrador has called a rally in Mexico City for Saturday at which time he plans to announce all the election irregularites his campaign has found.. he says he lost because of fraud. He's doing this to draw support for his legal challenge of the elections.

The election board has some time (until September I believe) before they have to announce who the official winner is.

Of course, we oppose any attack on bourgeois democratic rights, but at the same time, let's not have any false illusions about Obrador, who even The Nation admitted is "perhaps more ideologically aligned with Chile's Michelle Bachelet, a free-market "socialist", than he is with Venezuelan firebrand Hugo Chávez." source (http://www.thenation.com/doc/20060717/ross)

yeah, i think thats a correct claim, tho the gap between bachelet and chavez is pretty fucking wide. the wildcard was the strength of the left-wing of the prd to influence and push lopez-obrador to the left.

but im not sure if mexico has it in them to pull an ecuador or a bolivia, to march until the system caves in to their short term demand. the election was won by fraud and extraneous forces, but that is generally true of presidential elections in latin america and the world. the question now is what the prd and the left is capable of doing, how far they are willing to go. i wish these election commisions and tribunals had the power to demand a run off, but they dont. so lets see what happens in the streets, thats where the last bastion of hope always lies

Why do you say the election was won by fraud?

Because of ballot irregularities, votes not counted, or is there anything more you are refering to when you mention fraud?

I condemn Obrador for not accepting defeat. I have constantly been going on the official electoral website, the one with the most prestige, and Calderon has won, unfortunately. Madrazo has accepted the defeat, is Obrador such a coward that he cannot accept defeat.

Also, even if Obrador wins, next to nothing will change. He abuses of the illiteracy of the poor in giving them illusions of equity in Mexico. He promises more jobs, money for the poor, a better system under him, but what is the real motive? He wants power. He is not a people´s leader, he is a part of an elite, just like Calderon and Madrazo. He gives false illusions of a socialistic system, one not possible under elections. He would nationalize resources, like Chavez did, but that is not socialism, that leads to a dictatorship, authoritarianism, just like Venezuela and how Chavez falsely claims that Venezuela is socialist and under going a revolution. We cannot fall into accepting Obrador as enough for a better world. What is needed is revolution that will lead to socialism, and in my opinion, Obrador is detrimental to that.

Nice interview. I didn't know that Marcos was allowed by the Mexican government to travel outside of Chiapas?

After the cease-fire, he's been outside of Chiapas many times.

It seems that the protests that Obrador had hoped for haven't really developed yet.

Most Mexicans are fed up with the lies and deceptions woven by politicians much like Obrador and Calderon (Fox), that's why they refuse to take to the streets and protest the election

I hope Marcos or other radical organizations can awake the Mexican ppl into organizing and snatching the power away from the thieves that reside in los pinos be it Fox or Calderon

Too much nationalism in that country, they have a severe problem when it comes to pledging allegiance to a flag and their country

There seems to be some developments:

Thousands of Mexicans take to the streets (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060708/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/mexico_elections;_ylt=Ajw4iL_tQB0ouZ68L_AxLMe3IxIF )
