The Cuba Study Group of Santa Cruz sent this to People for the american way, moveon.org and truemajority.org ([email protected] ,[email protected],
[email protected]) It would be best if they received as many requests for this action as possible.

We are contacting you to request that you adopt the following as an action campaign. Pleace note the urgent dates involved.

Protest new restrictions on travel to Cuba.

In a speech in Miami on May 20th, President Bush will present new US policies regarding Cuba, which are expected to further tighten the blockade and to further
restrict travel of US citizens to that country. These restrictions on travel will affect organizations such as Global Exchange and US-Cuba Sister Cities that have been the primary avenue for legal people-to-people
exchanges between the two countries. The US-Cuba Sister Cities defines their mission as fostering relationships and understanding through mutually
beneficial exchanges between individuals, community groups, organizations, and institutions in the United States with counterparts in Cuba.

This is the kind of contact that George W wants to stop despite polls that show a majority of US citizens want to end the travel ban. In fact, over 176,000 US citizens traveled legally to Cuba in 2002 according to the US Department of the Treasury. How many traveled illegally is estimated at 50,000. We obviously want people-to-people contact. What kind of democracy is this when our government chooses our friends for us?

A movement to end the embargo has gained strength in Congress. A bill that would have ended funding to enforce the entire embargo was defeated by a slim margin of 204-226, only 14 votes shy of the numberneeded to pass. And this is no longer an issue divided along party lines - the House Cuba Working Group has 22 Democratic members and 22 Republican members.

The US blockade of Cuba is condemned by almost every nation in the World. For the 11th time, in 2002, the UN General Assembly voted in favor of ending the embargo by a vote of 173 to 3.

Yet, the Bush administration wants to make it even harder for people to travel to Cuba to see for themselves and make their own judgments. Instead they want us to believe that Cuba is a terrorist nation, that Cuba is manufacturing biological weapons (even after Jimmy Carter visited the island and completely dispelled this myth) and that Cuba's human rights record is the worst in the Western Hemisphere. The Bush administration is conducting a campaign to demonize Fidel Castro as we have demonized other leaders in the past before invading their countries.

The Bush family has well known strong, ties to the Cuban exile community (including well known terrorists). These are the folks who keep brother Jeb employed as the Gov of Florida and who authored the election fraud that placed George W in the Whitehouse. The Bush family is now poised to repay them for their “campaign contributions” by taking away our freedoms.

Let's get beyond this barrage of dis-information and manipulation. Let's end the inhumane, illegal, morally unjustifiable blockade that restricts our right to travel
and makes life so difficult for the Cuban people. Write to your Congressman and urge them to take action!!!

Sample letter:

I urge you to protest President Bush's latest restrictions on travel to Cuba and support measures to end the travel ban and lift the embargo on Cuba. President Bush's latest regulations will only continue the
harassment of the Cuban people and curtail our right as participants in a free society to travel to an island ninety miles off our shore.
