About 60,568 government, non-government and community primary schools across Bangladesh are now virtually closed as the teachers continue their movement, including a fast-unto-death program, to realize their demands for nationalization of their job and removal of anomalies in their pay scale.

Two factions of government primary school teachers, one under the banner of the Bangladesh Government Primary School Teachers Association (BGPSTA) backed by the BNP and the other under the Bangladesh Primary School Teachers Association (BPSTA) backed by the Awami League, are staging a fast-unto-death strike at the Central Shaheed Minar and Muktangoan to press home their demands, `News From Bangladesh' reported.

Besides, about 11,000 teachers from 3,778 community primary schools also have been staging a hunger strike since June 17 demanding nationalization of their job.

The teachers served an ultimatum on the government to fulfill their demands by today (Monday), otherwise they will commit suicide tomorrow (Tuesday).

Meanwhile, some 76,000 teachers of 19,000 registered non-government primary schools are also on the streets demanding entitlement by 100 percent of government benefits.

The leaders of government, non-government and community primary school teachers said they will continue their movement until the government accepts their demands.

Although Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia has asked the striking teachers to end their agitation and resume their duties soon considering the interest of the students, the teachers are continuing their movement, including their fast-unto death program to press home their demands.
