I purchased a ticket to a different movie and then went in to see Lost City, so I would not give the film any box office, but I wanted to see Garcia's perspective. I thought that would be important.

I actually really enjoyed parts of it. The barbarity of Batista was clearly expressed, as well as the division between different groups during the Sierra Maestra Campaign. During the war the depiction of Che wasn't too bad, basically to the point, some accuracy but focused on the negative without explanation. ie. he had to kill wounded hostages because they did not have much way of caring for them. There were prisoner exchanges, but these were difficult, also many members of Batistas forces switched sides and were allowed to.

But after the Revolution there is a lot of inaccuracy and blame. Like Garcia is screaming through teared eyes at an image of on the wall. His character in the movie even deserts his own brother, and the image of Guevara is inaccurate, showing him as a playboy instead of an overly serious Revolutionary which is the way he was at that point.

Still I think there are things to be discussed. Raul led the firing squads on the former troops of Batista, not Che, but it was barbaric and a mistake, many of those men were willing to capciate to Fidel, killing them left a bad taste in the mouth of many Cubans and is why many people are squimish on Raul. But blaming it on Che was stupid. Che as a heartless womanizer, stupid. He had women following him around, but he was very picky about that, only sleeping with his wife and a deep friend or two in the revolution, as far as we can tell.

Anyways, the one thing the film does lament, is the loss of Cuban music and this is justified. It took awhile for Fidel to recognize the value of the arts, but he is more aware now in that respect.
