Mr Triet is also expected to take a more active role in national politics than his predecessor, and to push for faster privatisation and deregulation, according to the BBC's Bill Hayton in Hanoi.

The new leaders will also be looking ahead to Vietnam's expected entry into the World Trade Organisation, and the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) conference being hosted by the country in November.

Bloody sellouts. W.T.O? HCM'd be spinning! And privatisation. They're headed China's way! I guess this is why Marx said that revolution should occur in a developed country, rather than jump a stage.

The Vietnamese Communist Party had a conference not too long ago debating Vietnam's future. Though it's not clearly set out right now, it definitely seems that Vietnam is definitely taking the capitalist path and deviating from the socialism one, something that they have been steadily doing for a while.

^I agree with Janus, this isn't the severe move that it appears to be
Vietnam has been gradually moving towards full and free capitalism
Ever since Doi Moi began, the Communist Party of Vietnam has been encouraging capitalist reforms, initiated to reenergize their economy
This is what happens when u fail to empower the ppl, and u concentrate on empowering a circle of leaders i.e the Communist party

If Vietnam was socialist, that would not have been decided by the state.

There really does seem to be a funk going on with China and Vietnam, all property is owned by the state ezcept deeds are let out to huge multi-nationals. Yet the state has no say over business.

I just can't make sense of any of it.
