View Full Version : Make Your Own Commie Comic!

So, I've been thinking about making a system to allow people to make a comic with revolutionary characters--lenin, che,etc.--and then have that comic added to the archives, which would be randomly displayed when someone enters the site. Sort of like a community-made comic. It's meant to replace another project I was working on, but has staled a bit due to my lack of time.

As such, I have programmed the first very limited software to do the main part of it--making the comic image. The program still needs a lot of work just for the comic-making part, and the website/archive part doesn't even exist, really. It's just a very simple interface that allows you to enter the phrases, then it generates the comic.

You can check it out at http://commix.redapollo.org/ and post something made from it here if you want.

Remember, though, that it's still in its infancy, and there aren't many options. I plan on making it so people have more control over the comic template and the scenes.. that is, the order in which people are talking, who's talking, etc. But right now it's just one comic template with no other options. Plus, the words in the text don't wrap, but just characters.. so you have half a word on one line and the other half on the next one (see example below). I plan on fixing that, as well as adding more features.

I'm curious to know any ideas other people might have, or any bugs you might find. Or if you think it's worth working on more in the first place. Plus, I'm curious to see what other people write :P

Here's an example.. this was created with the link above:

Anyone want to give it a try? (PS: you can simply link to the image on my server with the img tag, you don't have to upload it here).

a MUCH, MUCH more functional system is working now at http://commix.redapollo.org. You can currently choose from two different comic templates, but a lot more are in the works. You can also see other comics that are made, although none of the ones that were made in the previous system are available on it.

So does anyone have any ideas on what I could do to improve it?

It's not working for me, I click on create after I've entered all the text and nothing happens after that.

What browser do you use?

UPDATE: There seems to be a bug in the program that causes it to freeze if you make the last line of a comic too long (I think that's what causes it, anyhow?).. it also uses up a ton of the server's CPU for reasons beyond my understanding right now :P I just made a comic, it wouldn't let me create it, then I deleted a few words and it worked fine.. so something's going on there, in any case. It probably has to do with argument length limits in imagemagick (a command-line utility that the program uses).

I'm looking into it.. but most people shouldn't have trouble, unless they're TRYING to make a long sentence that fucks everything up. But hell, at least it works in most cases! :P

I'm actually in the works of my own hand drawin comic series called "commyk". It's going to be a sitcommmy of sorts featuring castro and el che living in the 21st century. With sexy results.

I'd like to see it when it's done. If you can scan it and send me an example, I can add it to the templates as a "guest comic" type of deal, with a link to where you might post more comics.

I'm actually going to open up a website for it, got the idea to make it from the thread in history discussing what che and castro were doing in some photo and have been drawing concept characters and stuff for it since.

I tried it with Opera and Firefox, but neither of them worked.

The last line may have been too long, I will try it again when I have a faster internet connection anmore time.

Note: I just realized that it causes a bug if you put spaces in the author name.. so don't do that until I fix it :P
