Well, I was wondering, what better way to keep the proles under wraps and support nationalism than if the ruling class 'creates' a competition which pits international proletariat against one another? Just wondering.

BTW. Go aussies. We are going to kill Italy.

Actually, there has been a hell of a lot of mixing between fans of different competing nations.

Indeed, friendships between people from different places and with different cultures have been encouraged by FIFA.

I believe the motto being used is A time to make friends.

yes a Time to Make friends, something the Dutch and Portuguese didn't take very serious in yesterdays game, hahaha there was like 20 yellow cards and 4 reds...

anyways, im so sorry for the Aussies, fucking Italians were given a gift by that retarded blind referee!! that wasn't a penalty!! incredible!! AUSTRALIA THE WORLD KNOWS YOU DID NOT LOOSE THAT GAME!!

Australia were robbed, but it's not like Italy will win it anyway.

you never know man, but i sure do hope that whoever Italy faces which is either Switzerland or Ukraine, beats their ass......everyone knows that wasn't a penalty, unbelievable such bad refereeing in the World Cup!! FIFA should make some changes for the next World Cup, maybe have replays like they do in American Football, because this is a very important call!!

Heavy nationalism is the way the ruling class can divert attention from worker' struggles in orde rto maintain control.

However, thats not what i believe the world cup is about.

And for your information, I'm an anarchist not a communist.

As Intifida pointed out, that is not the case with the World Cup. Only a minority use the occasion to be shitty to others.

I was more thinking of the mindset that the rich get together and say "You know what would fuck over the poor! Football matches!"

"Yeah!"

"That'll keep us in power!"

Have you ever thought that what you describe as 'nationalism' may have some other meaning? It may be part of human's essential need to conform to a group?

That's what the World Cup is.

I think that situation has calmed down from past years when there were riots and major fights that broke out. So like Intifada said, it is a good time to meet other people and will at least encourage some sort of respect/tolerance for others.

By the way, let's stick to the question and avoid discussing the World Cup itself such as teams, scores, etc.

Haha! Australia lost! Suck that Australia! (BTW, I live in the country.)

I think that it might be instructive for people to read the thread in the ShitChat (at least the last few pages as of now).

I think that the World Cup is a spectacle, like most (all?) major sporting events it fits nicely into the circuses bit of bread and circuses. (The welfare state satisfies the bread bit.)

Nice job, Coca Cola, profitting out of the patriotism of countries who hate each other when it comes to football, even though they are not the country you come from.

Oh, and Italy sucks.

I can't tell whether you're being serious or sarcastic, since this shit-ass third world computer plays those vids like ass.

But from what I can tell about the Coke ads that I've seen, they deal with everyone rooting for Brazil.

There is a Skol (beer) ad down here, that involves football games without Skol resulting in losses for Brazil and football games with Skol resulting in victories for Brazil and everything bad that can happen in football hapening to the oponent, dressed like the Argentine national football team. It ends with an Argentinean player sliding into a goal post and injuring his groin, to which the narrator comments "bola na trave". (ball on the post)

As for FIFA, they are a pretty bourgeois, corrupt bunch. But it must be noted that it is merely an international organization between the national football associations. It serves a very useful purpose in football. However, these guys clearly recognize the potential that an event like the World Cup has to perpetuate nationalism, to which they have answered with the anti-racism campaign.

Well, in case you can't see those videos, they show all kinds of stuff, from people to cellphones, bras, fruits, hotdogs, lightposts, skeletons and (?!) stadiums supporting Argentina/Brazil/Mexico (the things have some little red arms, the right one with a bottle), using a Billy Joel song called "We Didn't Start The Fire" (although the song in the Brazilian one is different, but it has the exact same concept).

I've been told by some relatives who visited the Iguazi falls a few weeks ago that not only Brazil but also Paraguay had the same ad.

Is that the one of the posts with feet that move so that Argentina doesn't score? They showed that one the other day in a tv program and it was funny.
