A Disgraceful Monument (http://luterano.blogspot.com/2006/06/disgraceful-monument.html)

In the municipality of Antiguo Cuscatlan, neighboring San Salvador, they plan to erect a monument to this gross violator of human rights. An article in La Prensa Grafica (http://archive.laprensa.com.sv/20060623/gransansalvador/526158.asp) describes how in this plaza, they will memorialize, Roberto d'Aubuisson, a sponsor of death squads and the man who directed the assassination of archbishop Oscar Romero... (The article in the conservative paper makes no mention of d'Aubuisson's ties to death squads or Romero's assassination)....

This past Wednesday, June 21st, the monument was inaugurated (http://archive.laprensa.com.sv/20060623/gransansalvador/526158.asp). A writer from counterpunch.org (http://www.counterpunch.org/reichart02252005.html) witnessed the inauguration, where he quotes the priest who conducted the religious mass in behalf of the inauguration as saying:

"We must fight poverty. But wait, we can't fight poverty. The poor will always be with us. So we must fight misery. Yes, that's it - we must fight misery."

Some info (http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/CIA%20Hits/ElSalvador_CIAHits.html) to consider about D'Aubuisson:

- His nickname was "Blowtorch Bob" for his favorite instrument of torture.
- An admirer of Hitler, D'Aubuisson was quoted as saying:
You Germans were very intelligent. You realized that the Jews were responsible for the spread of Communism and you began to kill them.
- He was an important member of the World Anti-Communist League (WACL), a worldwide umbrella organization for extreme-right militants. According to the aforementioned source, its members include: "expatriate Nazis, Italian terrorists, Japanese fascists, racist Afrikaners, Latin American death squad leaders and a number of US congressmen and 'former' CIA agents."
- He was also quoted (http://www.spectacle.org/595/helms.html) as saying to a rally of protestors:
"take care of this archbishop, these Jesuits, these other priests and especially these foreigners who are ruining the minds of our children. And if the gringos want to help the communists and cut military aid, we didn't need military aid in 1932. If we had to kill 30,000.....in 1932 [during "La Matanza" or "The Massacre" where farmers and natives were killed during a revolt against the oligarchy], we'll kill 250,000 today."
- D'Aubuisson headed the White Warrior Union (http://luterano.blogspot.com/2006/06/disgraceful-monument.html), an ultra-right death squad that assassinated many people...[the] death squads, [ran] from his office in the Legislative Assembly while he was president of the legislature, had close ties to the Salvadoran and U.S. intelligence services....

This is disgusting. Even the US ambassador at the time found this man repulsive.

So what else is new? In AmeriKKKa we honor lunatics like Teddy Roosevelt, slaveholders like Washington, Jefferson, Monroe et al.

How come the FMLN let go alive this bastard?? that's why I insist death squad leaders and their sponsors have to be faced with all force necessary. FARC needs to keep fighting until the day Uribe and his paramilitary thugs stop terrorizing progressive people in Colombia.

This falls into the tragic "what else is new?" category. We glorify every racist and reactionary from Columbus and beyond. This is just another insult propogated by a self-preserving establishment seeking to worship itself through the making of their villains into heroes.
